I guess it's a little bit harsh to say that I absolutely cannot stand him (I do feel that way about Bella, but not necessarily about him). But I don't like him. I realize that this is going to be a long comment, but I feel that people should always make a clear case for why they feel a certain way. Here goes.

1. He's selfish. He didn't seem to care much that his choices and actions could ultimately lead to the destruction of his family just as long as his own selfish desires were fulfilled. This is one of the biggest things that I don't like about him.

2. He seems to take his family for granted. Time and time again, they saved poor, weak little Bella from danger. I got the distinct impression that Edward felt that they were obligated to save her just because he was a part of the family and he loved her. It was almost as if he expected them to risk life and limb for her even though she didn't mean all that much to them. Now, I do believe that it would have been selfish, to an extent, if they didn't help Bella out. However, it felt to me like it wasn't asked of them, just expected and underappreciated. Another thing that irks me is that after the newborn battle in Eclipse, his family obviously would've been shaken (especially Jasper, but all of them would've been). I understand completely why he would've been concerned about Jacob and why he would've visited. But it seems to me that his family should've been his first priority. Not someone who he professes to hate.

3. He's rude. Even though most people think he's a gentleman, I don't think that about him at all. The two examples that I'm going to mention were aimed toward Jacob and Jasper. Edward was, undeniably, very rude to Jacob (for the record, I'm not a big fan of Jacob, either). Now, Jacob was just as rude to Edward as Edward was to him, but there's one key problem with this. If Edward were really the saint that everyone seems to think he is, wouldn't he have taken the high road? Would he really have resorted to making snide comments and low blows toward Jacob? These are characteristics that a child or an immature teenager would exhibit, not a 108-year-old. The second example is aimed toward Jasper. In Midnight Sun (the partial draft), Edward basically thought that Jasper should just accept being the weakest link and stop trying to get better at increasing his thirst threshold because his previous lifestyle is not conducive to the vegetarian lifestyle he's trying to lead. This was an EXTREMELY low blow. Jasper tries so damn hard not to be weak, and even though it's torturous, he works with his new diet to the best of his ability. In his previous life, he had no idea that it was possible to live as a vegetarian vampire, so how could he have done anything differently? And knowing (as Edward does) how much it hurts Jasper to be the weakest when it comes to resisting humans, he's just supposed to accept his limits? That's beyond the point of rude. That's just cruel.

4. He's an overbearing control freak. There are wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too many examples of this in the books for me to even start in on this one.

I'm sure I'm missing something. In fact, I know I'm missing something. Please understand: I do acknowledge that there are some very good qualities about Edward. However, the negative ones definitely overshadow the positive as far as I'm concerned.
