Facts
Hotaru is, in fact, blind. However, her senses are very powerful, enabling her to sense her surroundings - such as buildings, etc. She cannot read, obviously, and she has difficulty navigating in sand or water. Her water walking jutsu is something she has to work on constantly. Because she lives in the desert, Hotaru has to use her canine companion and seeing-eye dog, Ashi(legs), to move around. He is large enough for her to ride on his back. Being a sight hound, the dog can move at a blinding speed - but he's not fully grown so he has difficulty carrying her and moving at top speed.
Hotaru's family runs a produce shop branch owned by her relatives in the Leaf Village. The place gets decent business, and Hotaru is excelled in learning about vegetables and fruits. Her little brother is paraplegic thanks to an accident when he was very little, and he himself is a bit unsatisfied with life. Hotaru is a Saggitarius, and her 'nindo', or way of the ninja, is "...to fight for my country and protect my family no matter what the cost.". Sometimes it gets in the way of her own desires, and she takes things a little too seriously. She becomes defensive around subject matters of love and physical love. Because she's blind she'll never know it, and in a way she's rather jealous of it.
