... it seems unlikely. Are you certain you're not looking at guinea pigs or baby rats and assuming they are hamsters? I was thinking if you were from WA or somewhere I haven't been, there was a slim chance that there's still hamsters left from before the importing laws were tightened, but I've spent a lot of time in Victoria.

Irritatingly, I can't find conclusive official sites for this, but:

^ That site indicates that all hamsters except the Golden Hamster are illegal in Australia. It does show that the Golden Hamster may be legal in some parts of Australia, having been imported before the importation restrictions were tightened. Unfortunately, I can't find state by state evidence that it is banned. I know for certain that it is illegal in SA, NT and QLD.

^ That site indicates that hamsters cannot be imported into this country. If you search a little harder, you may find that castrated males may be imported for laboratory use, under very strict conditions.

Of course, there are a million unofficial sites informing the world that hamsters are not legal in Australia. Unless I see written, official proof of their legality, I will continue believe that you cannot get hamsters in Australia. Legally.
