It really isn't. As long as you purchased a spell with the spell effect you want to work with, you can make your own spell.
Basically, depending on the effect you're working with, you alter how it targets (self, touch, or target), the power of the spell (# of damage, or level of effectiveness), the area of effect (pretty nifty for effect spells =P), and the duration of the spell (in seconds).
Depending on the overall power of the spell effects how much gold it costs to research, and how much mana it costs to spell. =P

Another of my favorite spells..
I made like 10 different Feather spells, which thankfully stacked =P But each one gave me Feather 100 for 2 minutes. And it was cheap. So that was an extra 1000 pounds I could carry anywhere =D

Haha =P Fun stuff right there..
I loved playing as a High Elf Mage.. Super glass cannon. Haha.
I made a fun spell, too.. I called it Frenzy Party whee
Basically caused my touch target and all other appropriate targets within 25 feet to start fighting. =D It was a great way to clear a city and make thievery so very simple.
And it helped that I got fully Chameleoned at a point. blaugh
