I always got the impression that you couldn't really be rich on here unless you spend RL money on the monthlies and Cash Shop items(which you can usually sell for a ton of gold in the marketplace).

No, you can buy them wit gold in the marketplace. Just search "aquarium" and have the items go by price. You can also check out Tektek.org for item prices(it runs kind of slow sometimes, though).
