that's right! if you can be happy with little, i think you will be as happy as the old masters themselves. you will warm yourself at ryokan's fire and sit with han-shan amongst the white clouds.
i like that quote too. i think it's a truth many could stand to hear.
perhaps not as a hermit, hehehe. however, ryokan was very compassionate and perhaps he would like to write kind words to people here; i'd tell him it's a bit like writing letters!

my interpretation is like this!

the struggle against ever-changing fortunes is over;
just the necessities are fine
no use to try and conquer heaven and earth with concepts
you might just chain yourself to the words!
watching wealth and honor fade is better
and simply resting here is fine, too
ryokan stretches his feet. how perfect!
relax and be here.

there is also a poet named han-shan, who wrote:

your heart is not the same as mine
if it were
you'd get it
and be right here

i think if you can enjoy ryokan's poem, you will be right there with him. i hope i am making sense!
