About
Can I Keep You?
A small building, hidden in town,
Crammed full of prospective buyers,
Cages, hung from the ceiling and walls,
A man not even of twenty,
Convinced to gaze upon the many,
Pets of all races and genders,
To his ears came the sound of a sniffle,
And his nose the scent of salt, like tears,
Slowly he made his way over to her,
Huddled in the corner, wings taut,
Her ears a twitch and her tail curled,
An offer of food, before a touch to cheek,
Wooed out from the corner, badly scarred,
From many a beating upon untouched skin,
A smile, and one look into cerulean eyes,
A pause of breath before a transfer,
Coinage from one man to another,
Pulled from a cage, adorned a collar,
Cowering at his feet and sobbing,
Picked up and carried in strong arms,
Waltz out the door, free yet enslaved,
Not by will, but of mind and body,
An utterance of simple yet powerful words,
"Can I keep you?" from man to pet,
A simple but honest answer in return,
"Forever," from pet to Master.
