Jonouchi Katsuya is a 16-year-old high school student who goes to Domino High School in Japan. He is quite hot-headed and obstinate, leading his big mouth to get him into lots of trouble. In middle school, he spent his days as a street thug, hanging around Hirutani's gang. In high school, he was often found bullying Yugi Mutou; even stealing a piece of his Millennium puzzle and throwing it into the school pool. However, after being stood up for by Yugi in a tight situation with the school harshest scheming con-man, Jonouchi rescues the puzzle piece from the pool and returns it anonymously. This causes the two to become friends, which is a vital part of the story line, as it causes Yugi to become stronger throughout the series. His partner in his bullying, and best friend, is Hiroto Honda. After becoming friends with Yugi, he also meets Anzu Mazaki. In the manga, Jonouchi is poor. His father has strong addictions to both gambling and alcohol. He always goes to great lengths to pay off the debts his father owes. This includes getting multiple jobs in middle school even though most students aren't allowed. He was also features on the "Get the Million" game show. Most of the Duel Monster's cards he uses in the manga revolve around a gambling theme.
Jonouchi also has a sister named Shizuka Kawai. Her surname is that of her mother's maiden name while Jonouchi's stays with his father’s due to the divorce. This happened when he was 10. The two were separated in accordance to their parents. She has a medical condition that causes her to lose her eyesight, creating a subplot of which Jonouchi tries to get money to pay for a surgery she needs. He does this by entering the Duellist Kingdom tournament; however, he loses in second place to Yugi. Thankfully Yugi gives him the prize money he needs.Jonouchi's skill at Duel Monsters isn't near as good as Yugi’s but he still Duels throughout the series to improve his strategies and skill. He also has a tendency to duel as part of a tag team which is a frequent subplot throughout the series; however this theme was lost in the English dubbing.
