Her outward appearance is similar to a boy's due to her short hair and cute face; she had longer hair before but had to cut some of it due to a neighborhood child putting gum in her hair. Shortly after arriving at Ouran, Haruhi accidentally broke a vase worth $8,000,000 yen which is $80,000 in US currency while in the third music room while she was looking for a quiet place to study, and since then has been forced to work for the Host Club to pay for it. Mistaking her for a male, the club initially had her working as their servant, but they made her a host once they discovered that, beneath her glasses and rumpled clothing, she had a cute face. Her natural charm and relaxed demeanour instantly made her a favorite with some of the club's customers.She has a soft spot for expensive food, which she is usually unable to partake in, such as umtoro,otherwise referred to as "Giant Tuna" or 'tuna belly'; to her, they are a luxury. She enjoys ramen, strawberries and sushi in general, but gets especially excited over seafood. In some cases, the promise of such food can be used to bribe Haruhi into going along with the less sound plans of the host club.
