Lightning is a playable character in Final Fantasy XIII, and the main protagonist. She wields a gun-sword known as Blaze Edge that can switch between its forms. She is shown to be a cold person, who distances herself from her companions.

By my own account, I casted away my true name and chose the codename "Lightning" after my parents died, to distance myself from my past and to be stronger for Serah. My real name is Eclair (Claire) Farron

I am one of the few chosen by one of the Crystals to take down the floating continent of Cocoon and its tyrannous government, the Sanctum. However, some believe that my coming is a bad omen. I'm an ex-military policewoman with my rank, Sergeant, specified on the armor on my left shoulder, and now fighting against the PSICOM, a division of the Sanctum military I once served.

I assisted in the rescuing of Oerba Dia Vanille, Hope Estheim, and other "purgees" from the claws of PSICOM, teaming up with Snow Villiers and Team Nora, who I have authority over. I even punched Snow in the face when I felt his actions lead to our mission's failure.

I have a sister, Serah Farron, who is also Snow's fiance, but she was taken away by the fal'Cie. When Snow and I met again, he promised me that he'll protect the world and Serah.
