Background: Harvey Dent was Gotham's greatest D.A., fighting for reform, taking down crime rings, and opening Stonegate Penitentiary in order to help to free Gotham City of the crime network that had dug its roots deep for years. He primarily fought against Rupert Thorne, one of the biggest and most untouchable crime lords in Gotham.

Unbeknownst to anyone but his therapist, his best friend, Bruce Wayne, and his fiance, Grace, Harvey struggled with an internal anger, a second personality that he kept hidden from the public. This repressed personality started to take more and control as he grew more stressed, not only trying to take down Thorne, but because of his re-election campaign. After a group of Thorne's men were arrested in a sting, one of them provoked Harvey and kicked mud on his suit, unwittingly triggering his anger and causing the district attorney to attack him. Commissioner Gordon stepped in before it got out of hand, and spared Harvey further public humiliation.

Though the incident was broadcast, it hadn't dampened Harvey's votes or popularity, but it did highlight a serious issue that could cost him the election if he got out of control again. At his re-election party celebrating a successful raid on Thorne's men, he learned the judge threw out the case because the warrant wasn't complete. Again, his anger took control of him again, and he ended up throwing the messenger into the buffet table. After that, Bruce convinced him to get more help.

During their sessions, it came out that Harvey's anger had in and of itself become another personality, "Big Bad Harv." When Harvey was younger, a bully had picked on him, and to make it stop, Harvey lost control of himself and punched him. The next day, he learned the bully had been in the hospital, and Harvey was horrified enough by this that he swore he would never show his anger again, and only later learned that the bully had gone to the hospital for appendicitis. Even so, because he never showed his anger or gave it another outlet, it festered inside him until it became nearly unstoppable.

At the request of his therapist, he backed down a little on his campaign and increased his sessions to work on quelling the internal anger and to create a balance between both personalities.

On the night of the election, though the voting wasn't complete, it seemed Harvey had the election in his pocket. In the midst of the celebration, he received a phone call from Rupert Thorne. Thorne had acquired Dent's medical records, and threatened to reveal them to the press if he didn't meet privately with him immediately.

With the election at stake, harvey had no choice but to comply, met Thorne at an abandoned warehouse. Unbeknownst to him, Bruce had followed him as Batman, where Thorne began to make demands to Harvey to have him in his pocket like most other politicians in Gotham. During the encounter, "Big Bad Harv" came out, took down Thorne and his bodyguards. Batman stepped in and tried to prevent Harvey from going any further than he already had, but Big Bad Harv had control now.

In the struggle, Thorne grabbed Harvey's medical file and ran out into the warehouse, over a catwalk with chemical vats underneath it. Harvey ran after him to retrieve the file, with one of Thorne's armed men coming after him to take him down with a machine gun. Batman rammed himself into the gunman, causing the bullets to miss Harvey. Unfortunately, they hit a high voltage panel, which in turn caused one of the chemical vats to explode.

The ensuing explosion disfigured the left half of Harvey's face, arm, and upper body. He was hospitalized immediately and treated, but when the bandages came off, and Harvey saw his reflection, he had a meltdown and fled the hospital, both his physique and mental stability completely shattered.

Months later, he reappeared in a bi-colored suit and with his own gang, using his trademark silver dollar to decide when to hit and what to take when he did. No longer able to salvage his career as an attorney, he targeted Rupert Thorne's operations through criminal means. At first, he started taking down businesses that both served as fronts for Thorne's criminal activities, and had a relation to the number 2, before he located Thorne's criminal files, intending to do what Thorne did to him: make it public.

Knowing that he had to take Dent down before he ruined him completely, Thorne tricked Harvey into leading him to him by disguising his right-hand girl, candace, as a detective to plant a tracer with Grace, Dent's once-fiance, on the offchance Dent called. When Harvey eventually caved into his desire to see her, flipped good heads, and called, Grace went to him and activated the tracer, thinking she had informed the police.

Having Harvey right where he wanted him, Thorne demanded the file, to which Dent refused...until Thorne threatened Grace. Faced with such a choice that even the coin had no influence over, Harvey gave up the file, though once he had it in hand, Thorne ordered both of their deaths. Once more, Batman had found them and followed. In the struggle, Harvey ended up with one of Thorne's men's guns, and would have taken him out had Batman not thrown out several silver dollars to make it difficult for Harvey to find the right coin.

Unable to make a decision without it, Harvey broke down, and with Grace's encouragement, let himself be taken to Arkham Asylum for treatment.

Since then, Harvey has fought with his other half, trying to take control, sometimes getting close enough to have surgery and live a normal life, and other times giving into his twisted duality.
