Okay, it's still kinda rough. I'm rewording the second stanza.

An Unexpected Blessing

Veta kneels alone, a silent statue by an unmarked grave.
Teardrops dance in her eyes, 'twas a life her friend gave
To the senseless violence of war; lead still lodged in his side.
Like a roaring dragon, blood proved impossible to hide.
Whose fault was this ordeal? The girl wasn't too certain.
Was it a bullet or Uncle Sam that prematurely closed the curtain?

Three months pass, and her only comfort is chocolate.
An unsent letter remains crumpled in a pocket.
No one will listen, Veta's "friends" never call.
They don't joke about her weight, or how she's round like a ball.
Desperate for some guidance, she attends confession
And describes to the pastor her troubles, her depression.

It takes a few minutes; the girl's heart becomes hollow.
As the elderly man speaks, tears are hard to swallow.
For the miracle's sake, she needs to start believing.
After all, appearances can be deceiving.
