Bonjour! I do speak a little French. I'm still learning, too. I'm in my second year of classes and plan to go on to get a Bachelor degree in French, too (it was my mother tongue, but I moved to the US when I was three and sadly forgot it all when I went to an English school).

But I would be delighted to pass on some tips as I learn them.

What I've learned so far- Pick up a good French-English dictionary (a good one will have some examples of the more useful words used in different ways), and a book that charts verb conjugation. And most definitely take at least one class, because that will give you a good starting point to learn further (I tried learning Japanese on my own, on and off for about ten years, and was discouraged to realize that I wasn't really absorbing it without practice or a teacher to say I'm doing it right or wrong- then I took two classes and now know more than 3 sentences wink

Also, try to get your hands on some French comic books! They're a great help to study grammar and some new words. I download most of my foreign comics from avaxhome.ws (ps: they are great for music, too!).

Oh! And ... two seconds, I gotta find it... I just found this site yesterday: http://www.ielanguages.com/french.html Haven't had much chance to explore it much, but it seems pretty cool... it has sound clips that read all the phrases, and it has A LOT of phrases.
