<TR><TD colspan=2 bgcolor="#DDDDDD">"Young Lady! Young Lady!" A pushy woman dressed in a bright red power suit called to me. "Are you connected with the thief called Arson in any way?"











I shoved aside the tiny microphone that she'd pushed in my face.











"No! I have no idea what you're talking about!" I spat.





"No idea?" the lady mused. "Then why are you holding his mask?"











I looked down and realized that I was holding the severed mask tightly. The black fabric was worn and still warm. I must have stooped down to pick it up after he left...











"I... I... Uh..."











"Iris Winter?" A burly police officer asked me, flashing a shiny badge. It caught the pale morning light and glinted in my eye.





"Y-Yes?"





"Come with me."











I swallowed the queasy feeling back down into my stomach.











"Yes sir."

I squinted. The light that was shining directly into my face was making my eyes water.











"Um, could we turn this thing off?" I asked meekly, gesturing to the light. "It's kind of hurting..."





"No," answered the stout officer who'd brought me here. It was a quick, bark-like answer.











"Okay then..."





"Where were you last night, at around midnight?"





"I was... I was walking home."











I was nervous. Very nervous. I wondered if it was obvious how much I was sweating...











"And did you meet anyone on the way home?"





"Y-Yes. A man."





"And what happened when you met this man?"











I explained how he had assaulted me... how he had a gun. I showed him the cut on my lip and the bruise on my jaw. I told him how Arson had stepped out of the shadows, hurled his knife at the man, and saved me.











The policeman furrowed his brow. "And why were you holding a mask that resembled Arson's this morning?"





"I bought it," I lied quickly. 











Not to brag, but I'm a fantastic liar.











"I bought if for my Halloween costume. I'm going to be a cat. I took it out of the wrapping to try it on while walking home, and it broke."





He seemed to buy it.





"And after Arson saved your life?"











I winced. It sounded strange when someone else said those words... Guilt stuttered in my stomach.











"He ran away. I didn't even thank him..."











The officer sighed. He figured I was just some damsel in distress... No connection to Arson whatsoever. Boy, he was wrong! 











[i]I wonder how he'd react if I told him that, just hours later, Arson had kissed me...[/i]











[b]And that I kissed back.[/b]











[i]Only to make him back off, though![/i]











[b]Even though... maybe... just maybe... a teensy part of me...[/b]

"SHUT UP! I DID [i]NOT![/i]" I yelled out loud, smacking myself on the forehead. I hadn't meant to think that.











The officer looked at me strangely. I guess he wasn't used to people talking to themselves...











"Oh! Sorry!" I said with an airy laugh. "Um, can I go now?"





He sighed. "Yes, Ms. Winter. You may go."











I flashed him a charming smile and exited the Police Station...











Trying to ignore what I'd just found out about myself...

"Arson?" I called out to my seemingly empty apartment as I stepped inside. "Arson are you here?"











I knew he wasn't. He'd said that he couldn't visit me for a while because my place would probably be watched.











Not that he'd want to visit me... You know, after I'd almost revealed his identity and all. I sighed.











"Where is that damn boy when I actually want to see him?"











I cursed myself for having stupid false hopes.











I thought back to that morning. It seemed like days ago that I'd cut his mask... I twirled the small patch of black fabric in between my
