It is exceedingly hard to be agnostic or atheist in a D&D setting. The Gods show their powers every day through clerics and paladins, and you know Magic exists, even if it isn't seen very often. It's hard to say the Gods don't exist if one of their followers calls down a pillar of flame to smite his enemies. Even the minor miracles offer proof, you know?
Now, if real-world religions could cast Flame-Strike, I'd probably be a religious person.

I am always dming for my group and that character would be a nightmare. Okay lets just assume your DM is going to bend brake and distroy any pertanent rule. What about the group dynamic? We are all nerds here of some degree so I will speak now in comicbookese. Let us think about the justice league. Is flash, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunterm Green Lantern and Superman going to sit back if and be cool if Batman becomes a demonic being - not even an evil demonic being but a rather nice amoral demonic being? Oh hell no! they are going to lash batman down with the sexy lasso of truth (nigh unbreakable) and call in who ever they have to to undeamon Batman. I understand the flaw in my example is that batman would trounce all of them but it is just an example.
