Eh, I think it sticks pretty well to the original concept and they just boycotted the side projects as "less important" (minigames, fishing, towns, arenas etc.). It was meant as a discussion board for anime/manga with avatars to dress up, and then it grew.

Honestly, I couldn't run a site like this. I couldn't run any site, really.
And I've still graduated as an IT major. I could make a site, sure. Put it up and keep it up, fix stuff that ******** up, no problem.
But running it, getting it popular and keeping the users on the site all the while making profit?
Not a snowball's chance in hell.

Indeed.
But it's a legit business model, and people should know that Gaia is a business after all, not some welfare site. Gaia has employees, headquarters, servers and whatnot that costs money. Without the revenue from ads/g-cash/offers, gaia would've been riddled with bugs and constant downtimes, not to mention having been incredibly slow.
Now we've got hardly any downtime ever (happens like twice a year and usually only for a couple of hours when it happens).
They're not a, as you said it earlier, "pay to access" site, which is incredibly good.

I can only agree with you; it's like the people that protest about free to play games having mini transactions. Without the mini transactions, that often give little to no advantage over the average player (mostly aesthetic changes), the game company wouldn't be able to keep their game free to play.
At least not if it required accessible servers, updates and fixes.
People are just generally stupid.
