Shinigami, referred to with the suffix sama as a term of respect, is the God of Death himself (the Grim Reaper of Western legends). He is the leader of Shibusen and the most powerful character in the series—with the kishin Asura being the only other character shown to match him in power. Eight hundred years prior to founding Shibusen, Shinigami used his own soul to seal Asura under the school. He is therefore unable to ever leave Death City. Back then he wore a more skull-like mask and spoke in a much scarier manner, but changed to not scare the children of his school. Though he acts and appears like a joker, if provoked he will return to his serious and threatening demeanor.
Shinigami can be contacted by a student who writes 42-42-564 (shini shini goroshi) on a window or mirror, which literally means death-death-murder in Japanese numeric substitution. He prefers to remain in the "Death Room" in Shibusen, where he oversees the school and gives out orders to the faculty and students. Shinigami's personal weapon is the Death Scythe Spirit, Maka's father, who almost never leaves his side. This means Shinigami constantly has to put up with Death Scythe's antics on fatherhood, causing the two to usually bicker with each other. Shinigami has a child himself, a son, Death the Kid, whom he cares for but at the same time thinks he can be quite the handful, and is quite glad that Patti and Liz look after him.
Shinigami has a special move called the "Direct Noggin' Shinigami Chop" where Shinigami smacks people with his oversized, flat hands. Though the attack is often used playfully to shut up Death Scythe, when serious Shinigami can use these chops to knock someone unconscious or slam them into the ground.
