Chapter 1:
I groaned as I reached the bottom of the stairwell. Just two flights of stairs, and then it’ll all be over; I silently stated to myself, you can do it. I prepared myself for the climb and began to trudge up the stairs. I finally made it to my dorm; I reached into my pocket and pulled out the key. I entered the dorm while shoving the key back into my pocket, you wouldn’t call it a small dorm, but you wouldn’t call it a large dorm either. I immediately dropped my backpack and sat down in the beanbag chair by the door, the only thing I had unpacked. The room was bare except for the bunk bed against the wall across from the door and the dresser across from that.
I decided to unpack my belongings, starting with my laptop. I picked my way through the piles of boxes until I found the on labeled electronics. A victorious smirk crossed my face as I began to rummage through the box. Carefully wrapped at the bottom of the box was my precious laptop. I leaned against the bunk bed, the cool metal biting into my flesh, and began to sort through my email. I had received a couple emails from my parents and my pen pal, Audrey; we’ve been friends for years. Right as I was about to click on the message, the door was flung open, revealing a dreary looking girl, dragging a heavy suitcase and carrying several burdensome boxes. I set my laptop gently down on the top bunk and rushed to the door to help the girl.
She had black hair, almost as dark as my own, contrasting with silver eyes. “Thanks, my name’s Naomi Kai.” She said, relieved for the help. “I’m Valencia Blake, but people just call me Val.” I replied back, acknowledging her thanks with a nod. ‘I’m assuming you’re my roommate.” She said with a light laugh. “I guess so.” I replied with a smile. “We should probably start unpacking our things.” Naomi said dully, releasing a long sigh. “You’re probably right.” I agreed with the same enthusiasm. We settled down on the floor and began to sort through our stuff. I conquered the top bunk and the dresser, while Naomi gladly accepted the bottom bunk, and was very enthused about getting the closet. See, apparently she’s pretty big on clothes, personally, clothes have never been a big thing in my life, clothes are clothes.
Once we were settled, I glanced around the room. It looked much more friendly than before, the plain white walls were now had colorful posters hanging from them, varying from favorite bands to ones we had made. I personally liked my corner of the room; I had put up a cork board and decorated it with drawings and pictures of friends. I took another look at my cork board. I glanced at the pictures and an empty feeling came over me. My midnight blue eyes settled on a picture of Jayce and me at the park near my house, we looked so happy, the scene looked so perfect. After contemplating the picture, and a trip down memory lane, I walked over to the cork board and removed the picture, placing it on my dresser next to my alarm clock, it read, 8:46. It was getting late, and I should probably start on my homework, my loads and loads of homework. While I dragged my backpack up onto my bunk, Naomi had busied herself reading a thick novel. Once I was up and settled I began the homework with my math homework, always been one of my best subjects.
As the hours straggled on, I slowly finished my homework; I was finished by 10:00 and was exhausted. I leaned over the railing of the bunk and placed my books on the end table; trying not to disturb anything already placed there. Unluckily, I failed, miserably at that. The alarm clock went crashing to the floor, followed by a volley of books, and the picture of Jayce slipped silently of the table onto the floor. I cringed at the racket, hoping I hadn’t disturbed the sleeping Naomi, but once again, I failed. Naomi jolted to a sitting position on here bed, sending the book she was reading sprawled on the floor. “Sorry,” I said sheepishly, “Its’ okay,” She grumbled unhappily. I swiftly slid off of me bed and began to stack the books up, once stacked; I carried them over to my back pack to put away. I spun around to retrieve the picture and alarm clock, but saw Naomi putting the alarm back on the table and holding the picture. “Who’s that?” Naomi asked, looking at the picture. “Is he your boyfriend?” “No,” I whispered quietly, “He was my friend.” “Was? You guys look so happy, what happened?” Naomi pressed. “He-, he died…”I trailed off.
An awkward silence settled over the room. “I’m Sorry,” She apologize, “I shouldn’t have pried.” “Don’t be,” I said, clearing my throat. “It wasn’t your fault, it wasn’t anybody’s fault.” Except mine, I silently added. She silently handed me the picture breaking the silence, “Here, it’s getting late we should probably turn in soon.” I nodded in silent agreement, taking the photo.
