Journey to my mind.
Stuff I say and stuff... stuff.
my blog-oh-rooni
Topic one: During the summer I took it upon myself to read Emily Bronte’s classic novel: Wuthering Heights. After recollecting all of my thoughts on the novel, I have come to the conclusion that her work rivaled a rollercoaster through all of its complex emotions and simply thought-provoking descriptions. Emily Bronte combined Heathcliffs’ and Catherine’s doomed love affairs as well as Hindley’s own tragic, villainous agenda to create a gothic mixture of passion and revenge. The once-upon-a-time childhood gentleman whom had shared a gypsy disposition had evolved into a wolf-man that was considerably troubled by his own lust for revenge on the family that had borne all his cruel, passionate instincts. This was also added to the fact that half-way through the novel; the now deceased Catherine lingered in his mind like the shadow of her spirit. As a member of the audience, I can’t help but deeply respect Emily Bronte for choosing Lockwood as the principal narrator of her novel. As we venture forth Wuthering Heights so too does our narrator. Our once careful intuitions of the mystery surrounding the sordid characters within the walls of the estate parallel Lockwood’s own assumptions of Heathcliff. These assumptions, as my own while reading the novel, dramatically change and seem almost absurd once we come to know the history that Nelly, a servant whose knowledge of the riveting story only goes as far as what she can gather, shares with Lockwood. All of these elements; the psychological aspects of the novel, its romantic and complex riddle of cruel acts displayed by its main characters, and the tragic deaths of most of its female cast whom leave their frail men to seethe in the past and their own melodramatic attributes. A haunting melancholy comes to mind when I think of Wuthering Heights. The author certainly had a lot to ponder while writing such a morbid tale of lights that shelter the human mind and the darks that takes us captive. Still, “it was a dark and stormy night” can definitely be used to describe Wuthering Heights, but one cannot miss that the tone of its passages perhaps more clearly represent the effects of time and the rebirth effect that came with the newer generations. This novel is clearly imprinted unto the list of books of must-reads for college students because of its abundant lyrical attributes and the heavy complexity of Emily Bronte’s classic Yorkshire tale. Wuthering Heights deserves every bit of praise and merit it can raise. Not only because of its rhetorical value, but because of how eloquently it probes at the human mind and how masterfully it recollects what can and what cannot be erased with time. It’s a timeless novel that expertly raises the bar on the literary level as well as challenges the reader to uncover and test their instincts against the mystery surrounding Wuthering Heights before the entire history is revealed. It’s riveting, really.
