Fuyu no Shirayuki : Prologue

It was a cold, early December morning. A shinigami sat on the roof of her squad headquarters. It offered a relatively good view of Seireitei. The shinigami found it quite entertaining to watch the other members of the thirteen protection squads going about their business on the streets below. This was one of many reasons she had an attraction to high places. It was nice to get away and above all others.
Her name was Kamataki Raitsu. She usually introduced herself by explaining the kanji in her name: Kama as in scythe, taki as in waterfall, rai otherwise pronounced “ki” in “kimasu” or to come, and tsu which meant harbor or coastline*. Raitsu was slightly short. She had hair that was long, straight and could best be described as light orange. Her eyes were dark yellow. She, like all other shinigami, wore the black uniform of the gotei juusan tai.
She had several friends, most of whom where assigned to other squads. Within her squad alone, there was her subordinate, Kusuku Ririn, and her arch rival and captain, Kirishima Rian, who was called Isredel for various reasons by his friends. Aside from them were Tsutamatsu Minami in tenth squad, the one who came up with most of the insults for Isredel including the infamous “Kareki-taichou” nickname. There were also Fujieda Miyaki and Sugiyama Kiyogin who Raitsu had known since their days in Rukongai.
Today, Captain Isredel had not left the headquarters. Raitsu found this most strange, as Isredel-kun had not left the headquarters all morning, even to get his “breakfast” (which was really a load of junk food). Raitsu figured that either he was swamped with paperwork, or he was trying to avoid her. She believed that he probably didn’t have much paperwork, as he took pleasure in forcing all of his subordinates to do all of his work for him, so he could relax. He did have a habit of being extremely lazy at times, and what kind of captain does that?
Raitsu needed to investigate, especially if he was avoiding her. It was her duty to never let him succeed at such things. She sighed, stood up, and jumped off the roof of the headquarters. She landed lightly in front of the door, and walked in.
“Taichou! You here?” she called, and paused for a moment waiting for an answer.
She got one.
“That you Kamataki? Get lost,” came Isredel’s voice from a room just down the hall
Raitsu rolled her eyes, which was a thing she did a lot. Before Isredel became a captain, he usually called her “Raitsu-chan, or Raitsu,” but when he did become a captain, he got some kind of superior attitude toward all of his friends, and began to address them by their surnames, and speak formally to them. It annoyed Raitsu, but she did have to admit that it helped him be more captain-like than he would have been otherwise.
Next Raitsu concentrated on trying to find him. It didn’t take a whole lot of thought. Unless Isredel had laid out some kind of trap, it was quite obvious that he was in the room his voice came from. And he was usually too lazy to lay out any such traps.
Raitsu walked down the hall, and came to the door from which she heard his voice coming from. It was his office. She opened the door and entered the room.
Inside, she found Isredel sitting at his desk shredding papers. He looked like he was very annoyed at something. Perhaps he couldn’t force any of his subordinates to do his dirty work for him. Sucker.
“I thought I told you to get lost,” Isredel grumbled without looking up. Judging by his tone of voice, Raitsu confirmed that he was annoyed at something.
“Dude, what’s your problem this morning?! You didn’t even leave the headquarters this morning, not even for your morning snack!” exclaimed Raitsu.
“Have you memorized my schedule, Kamataki?” he asked coldly.
“Sure, I’ve got nothing better to. I’d like to go on a vacation to the world of the living...... Anyway, answer my question,” Raitsu said.
“It was paranoia. I heard you, Kusuku-san and Tsutamatsu-san plotting to plasma torch my office. So I decided to stay here and guard it. Anyway, what is a plasma torch?” Isredel said this like he seriously believed it.
Raitsu burst out laughing. “Wow, that’s really sad. You actually believed that? Think about it, taichou. Where would we get a plasma torch? They don’t seem to have a whole lot of them in Soul Society! How would we carry it here? Seriously!”
“I was joking, Kamataki,” Isredel said loudly, but without yelling in an attempt to get through Raitsu’s laughing.
Raitsu calmed down. “Right.......” she said, “so what were you really so annoyed about, then?”
Isredel glared at Raitsu for a moment and then began, “Too much paperwork. And not only that, but apparently I’ve been ordered to take some allies with me and go to the real world to keep an eye on to arrancar that have recently appeared in Karakura town.”
“What are you so annoyed about? Isn’t that a good thing? We finally get to get out of here and actually help! And I finally get to put some of my new skills to use against worthy opponents. Of course, I have to admit that I am too lazy to fight any espada. I’d get my butt whipped and if I was able to put up any resistance, it would waste a lot of quality time which could be better spend napping.”
Isredel glanced up at Raitsu and said, “Yes, but most of the numeros are too weak for you. Isn’t that convenient? I personally, will not accept any opponent other than an espada. A good one too. Anyway, as I was about to say, we also have another problem. However, when compared to the issues with Aizen and the arrancar, it is a very minor problem.”
“What is it?”
“A sadistic group of humans that call themselves ‘Kuroyuki.’ In general, their members are from all over the world, and they do have strong spiritual abilities, that could pose a problem for us. By themselves, though it may take a while, we could probably take them out, but now it seems they have reappeared just as we are dealing with the arrancar, and it could be a lot harder when we have already sent all of our best fighters to deal with the arrancar.”
“Hold on, you said ‘reappeared,’ does that mean they’ve attacked before?”
“Yeah, apparently there was a run-in with them fifty years ago, but then, they were weak, and we let them escape with their lives. About a week ago a kuroyuki business card was found in a burned down building near Karakura. It was made of reishi, meaning that the police and firefighters that went to investigate it couldn’t see it. The shinigami stationed in the area found it and turned it in. Their current members and motives are unknown, but from the past we think that they consider themselves enemies of anyone, may they be shinigami, hollow, normal humans, and most likely arrancar, as they try to eliminate them all. Anyway, this is all we have to deal with. So who do I bring besides you?”
“Ano... hold on, are you asking me who would be a good choice to bring? Why don’t you go look it up for yourself? Or just bring the strongest remaining in Soul Society. Why do you need my help!” exclaimed Raitsu.
“Because I don’t feel like taking the time to think about it. And, besides, you are my subordinate, so you have to do what I tell you to, and besides, you know more people such as all your sister’s friends,” answered Isredel.
Raitsu gave him a nasty look, then asked, “Are you allowed to take anyone outside 5th squad?”
“Yes, and besides you, I cannot take anybody at or above the rank of lieutenant. So how many third seats you think we can get that will also work well with us?”
“Let’s see...... I don’t know first or second squads’, but third squad is my sister’s friend, Kimura Yukiko, but she has the attention span of dirt, except toward Sennami-taichou, whom she idolizes. I don’t like fourth squad’s. How about Ririn-chan?”
“NO WAY!!!!! She’ll spend so much time annoying me! I’m not bringing her or Minami-chan in the first group, unless I have no other choice, but if I can call for reinforcements later, I’ll send for them. Besides, I can just see the three of you plotting against me when you think I’m not looking!” Isredel said.
Raitsu grinned guiltily. Darn it, that was exactly what she had planned to do....
“Anyway, I don’t know six, seven, nine, or twelve, either. However, eight is Merii-chan, but you should know full well that siblings fight, and that won’t work. We’ll probably fight over something trivial at a critical time. Besides, she lives to annoy me. Tenth squad is Minami-chan, and you already said not her. Eleventh squad Madarame is already in the real world. We both already decided that thirteenth squad’s are annoying. Well done, Taichou! That rules out all third seats!” Raitsu said.
Isredel sighed and replied, “Well, who else do you know above tenth seat?”
“Well.... Kiyogin-kun works at R&D and is also a member of twelfth squad. Fourth seat, I think. Well? Do you know him?” suggested Raitsu.
“Nn, isn’t that your old friend from Rukongai? I think I’ve met him before a few times. Yeah, let’s take him, as it would help to have somebody from R&D with us, and the other members scare me,” Isredel said.
“Well, that makes three. How many do we have to bring?” asked Raitsu.
“Between four and six. But I’d prefer four. So we need one more.”
“Okay then, I think that there’s also Isonaga Tsuya of tenth squad. Money obsessed freak, I think. Gives a friend a ‘present’ and comes back a week later and demands payment for it, usually twice what she payed for it originally. The annoying part is that they actually pay her, because she uses, ‘If you are a good friend, you’ll pay me or give it back!’ Aside from those stunts, she’s actually not that bad though. Just don’t accept any ‘presents’ from her.
“Miyaki-chan is my other friend from Rukongai. Do you know Fujieda Miyaki? She now has my old title, thirteenth squad, fifth seat. She’s actually better than an average fifth seat.
“Lastly, the only others I can think of are Sugiyama Sami and Iwasaki Mutsuko of eighth squad. Seventh and Eighth seats. Not that great. Also, Sami is Kiyogin’s sister, and they fight like Merii and I though not as much. Besides, we only have one spot open, and Sami and Mutsuko are almost inseparable. And obnoxious. So what do you think, Taichou?”
“I think Isonaga-san would be the best bet. She’s one of the strongest you listed, and we might get along with her well enough. So, Raitsu, will you go tell Sugiyama-kun and Isonaga-san that Kirishima-taichou wishes to take them to the real world with him and Kamataki-fuku taichou. In the unlikely event that they refuse, pass the message on to Fujieda-san, and then to Kimura-san. If even they refuse, report to me, and we’ll reconsider this. Arigotou!” said Isredel.
“Wakatta!” Raitsu bowed (though not very low), and left the office to deliver the message.
