Darkness Is Only The Beginning--Prologue
PROLOGUE

Waking up in this fashion was never any less painful than now. As the small elf jolted up in her bed the last remnants of the familiar dream-vision faded away, and as always it left the same painful mark on her memory. Cold beads of sweat rolled down the smooth contours of her forehead and she opened her mouth to let out a long-winded sigh. Though she felt no relief for she knew that soon would come the night of the fall of Darkness. For years now, visions of the destruction of the God of Darkness have plagued her dreams, causing her great pain. She held secret within her a vision of an event that would affect the whole world and its people. Such is the fate of a Vision Keeper.

As a Vision Keeper, Etenity is only allowed to share the contents of her visions with the members of the Great Council that governs over all the nations of Ariquiarr. As a precaution to make sure that the future is not revealed to non-council members the Vision Keepers are born mute, but are given the ability to communicate with certain others called Listeners. Through telepathy, they can speak to the Listeners so that they are not completely separated from communicating with the outside world.

Etenity rose from her bed letting the sheets fall onto the rough wooden floor. The air was cool outside of the warm comforts of her bed and the goose bumps that formed on her porcelain flesh did well to show it, but she knew that they were there for another reason as well. She walked over to the window beside the bed and stared out onto the rolling countryside below her house. And though this night was dark, silvery curtains of moonlight blanketed all that would dare reach for it. The elf’s bright crimson hair, though tied loosely at the back of her head, fell in long glimmering tendrils in front of her body as it rested comfortably over her left shoulder.

She closed her deep green eyes and shook her head, wishing to herself that the day in her vision would never have to come, but she knew that there was nothing that she or anyone else could do to prevent the inevitable from happening. Turning from the window she walked to the center of the room and beckoned silently for her in-house Listener.

‘Jade. Awaken at once.’

Within moments an elven woman entered through the door of the bedroom. She was what a man would call attractive– slim, but with a well suited figure. Her skin was a milky tan and her hair a beautiful shade of green. It framed her face in such a way that made her look melancholy, even though she was usually in good spirits. Jade glared at Etenity with fiery magenta eyes.

“Do you have any idea what time it is?” She asked groggily with definite annoyance in her voice.

‘Soon our very futures will change. We must go at once to the Hall of Council,’ Etenity answered in the gravest of tones. ‘We are now to deal with matters that will shape out very destinies. The world is about to enter a time of dire straights, so we must hurry. Go and prepare yourself for a journey to Islancornae. We leave as soon as we are ready.’

Jade was now fully awake and a look of concern crossed her face, but she nodded obediently and left the room to prepare herself for travel to the great city.

______________________

The night was clear, even more so than Etenity realized, and the air was crisp and icy with a breeze that could cut through even the thickest of fabrics. The stars that shown above were brighter than normal and the moons appeared to be trembling in anticipation of the events to come.

Etenity and Jade made their way down through the sleeping village and quickly entered the young Forest of Arenghi, which bordered the small town. Quickly they made their way down the main road and soon came upon a small stable nestled in a clearing off to the right of the road. Etenity had told Jade that the use of horses was necessary for the journey and that they were going to visit an old friend of hers to acquire a decent pair ‘runners’ for the journey. Etenity slowed her pace as they neared the stable and pointed to it as they arrived.

“This is the place?” Jade asked skeptically. “It looks abandoned. Are you sure you have the right place, Etenity?” It was true. The stable, once seen up close, did appear to be abandoned. The cabin attached to the horse stalls lacked the fine touches of inhabitance. Shingles hung dangerously from atop the sagging roof and cobwebs filled every corner of the front porch, but Etenity smiled at the sight of the place.

‘I am positive. My friend just isn’t much of a housekeeper.’ Etenity responded as she climbed the steps of the porch and rapped on the old door loudly. A small cloud of dust flew free each time she hit the panel of rotting wood. Impatiently, Jade moved over to the window beside the door and bent over to peer inside the cabin, she could see nothing. It was just as dark inside the cabin as it was outside of it. She stood back up and ran her fingers through her hair, giving the elf a questioning gaze.

“Look, I don’t think anyone is here,” Jade said, when suddenly a light flickered to life through the window.

‘Ah, but there is,’ Etenity replied softly. A shadowy figure could now be seen moving about the cabin as it made for the front door. The sound of multiple locks being undone could be heard from the other side. Jade looked to Etenity and raised an eyebrow, but said nothing. The door now swung open and a man emerged from within, with tired eyes and a lantern in hand, swaying slightly in the doorway.

“Who’s there?” He asked drowsily as he rubbed his eyes.

‘Have you forgotten me so readily Adriel?’
Etenity answered silently, looking at the man with bright eyes. The man dropped his hand from his eyes and looked down at the one before him in disbelief.

“Etenity?” He gasped as his eyes swelled with tears of joy. He had a smile warmer than any Jade had ever seen, one that could melt the heart of anyone who laid eyes upon it. Then, in one sudden movement he pulled Etenity into a close embrace. It looked as if he would never let her go. “Of course I haven’t forgotten you. How could I?” He answered breathlessly.

“Wait. He’s a Listener?” Jade blurted, just realizing that Adriel had heard and answered Etenity.

‘This is my oldest and closest friend, Adriel Ohenh.’ Etenity said to her Listener. Jade looked to Adriel and nodded in greeting before she reached to shake his hand.

“Nice to meet you Adriel. My name is Jade Kaspun.” She replied. Adriel smiled at Jade and then looked back down to Etenity with the same water filled eyes and warm smile. Then, as if just realizing that they were all standing out in the cold, he invited the two travelers into the cabin.

“Please come inside out of the cold and make yourselves comfortable. I’ll make something warm for us to drink.” He said as he shut the door behind them, relocking the many locks. Jade and Etenity removed their heavy cloaks and hung them on a rack just beside the doorway and moved towards a small futon near the hearth of the cabin where Adriel quickly started a fire.

“There, this will get you warmed up in no time.” He said, holding his palms near the flames. Now that there was ample light, Jade was finally able to see how Adriel truly looked. He was tall; taller than Jade had originally been able to distinguish, with a slight muscular build. His rich, dark brown hair was pulled back into a pony tail that was held up by what looked like a thong and a pair of hair sticks and his eyes were a shade of green deeper than she had ever seen.

For a moment, her breath had caught in her throat. He was one of the most handsome men she had ever laid eyes upon. The slightest evidence of a blush formed on her face and she averted her eyes to the floor. Adriel looked to her with concern, “Jade are you feeling alright?” He asked. Jade suddenly snapped her head up and nodded. “No, I am fine. Just a little chilled I suppose.” She answered, trying to cover up the fact that she was really embarrassed. The skepticism in his expression was still quite evident, but he didn’t push her.

“Now that the fire is going, I think I can put on the mead then.” He said and took a small liquid filled kettle and placed it on a hook over the fire. “So, to what occasion do I owe this pleasure?” Adriel asked pleasantly as he stood and took a seat in a chair across from them, but from the quick change in their expression Adriel knew that something wasn’t right.

“What’s going on?”

‘The time has come, Adriel.’ Etenity answered in a grave tone. Adriel shifted uncomfortably in his seat.

“You mean…?” His voice quivered. The Vision Keeper merely nodded and in reply he did the same.
