MegaCon 2008
Well, the girl and I were at MegaCon over the weekend, sitting our table. It was much better than Otakon 07, financially, but MegaCon's crowd has historically been more open to indie comics.

Otakon's enjoyable to visit, but to sit a table at, unless you're catering to young teenagers with the hundredth piece of Zelda, Naruto, Inu Yasha, or similar fantasy-oriented fan art, or are pushing a knock off comedy about the wacky hijinks of some romatic triangle, then you're pretty much shot. The anime crowd is younger than it use to be, they have simple tastes and it's not just a matter of my getting older, it's the material the companies are importing for translation. RSJ has a better handle on the anime crowd, I have a better handle on indie comics, and comics geared towards the 18-35 non-mainstream set, which is why MegaCon is a better animal for me. I still remember when, save for a couple of translated series on Saturday morning TV, the only way you could really get anime was at one table at a science fiction or comic con, booted on VHS, raw. No dubs, no subs. Maybe once or twice a year you'd get out and pick up a few episodes on tape. Crazy times, the old days. Nowadays it's all get it via torrent, fansubbed a day or two after it's aired in Japan.

One girl who stopped by the table best illustrated the disease that is instant gratification when she said she couldn't wait a month or two for new issues of a book, because that was simply too long. She could barely wait week to week for new episodes of her favorite anime series to torrent. Oh how she would have missed out on brilliant series like Strangers in Paradise, with its bi-monthly schedule, or Love & Rockets, coming out quarterly.

Technology is ruining us.

Though while I was there I had a couple of propositions from people who want me to attend Supercon in a couple of months and Yasumicon in August, both of which are distinct possibilities. I like the con experience, I love sitting a table, and when I do them, like at KuniCon and Otakon 05 & 07, I enjoy doing panels and workshops. I just need more cons like MegaCon (and Otakon 05...07 was bleh), where I can move enough product to justify my travel expenses.

Last minute update on Otakon 2007
Okay, so the Otakon schedule is now out and available in PDF format on their site.

Friday night is my "workshop"...on the schedule it just says "Stormchild Studio" from like 5:30p to 7:30p in Workshop 3. Though I haven't spoken with the planner directly this week, I was told by another staffer last night they have someone else doing sequentials and inking on Saturday (unless there's been some confusion, which is entirely possible given the jumping around between phone and email conversations). So, to avoid being overly redundant, and because the workshop apparently has no particular designated subject...

I'm going to just say, "the creative process" and let those who attend pretty much dictate the topics by the questions asked. Plotting, scripting, dialog, penciling, inking, lettering, tips, tricks, materials, whatever...I'll pack my laptop and my art supplies and we'll just go from there. If you want to talk about the comics, we can do that too.

Actually, I find the idea of something more freeform like that rather appealing. Sure, it has potential for chaos, but therein lies the entertainment value.

Afterwards, Hexx, Anthony and I are going out for dinner (I don't particularly care where so long as it has beer), so anyone who wants to tag along and continue whatever trouble we've gotten ourselves into is more than welcome to follow.

Otakon 2007 is a go.
I will be at Otakon, along with Hexx and Anthony. We'll have goodies at the table in Artists' Alley, and there should be a workshop, but I'm still waiting to hear back from Otakon on the when and where of the `shop. Come on by and hang out...and buy stuff so I can feed the children. 4laugh

I'm going to try something different this convention, though. See, for as much as I may want to have in-depth conversations with all the people that come to hang at the table, I get distracted by the business, the things going on at the convention in general, all the people milling around...and I feel bad when I feel as if I haven't been very attentive to those of you who come by primarily to see me. So come on by, but understand if I'm a little scatterbrained. Because of that, however, we're planning to going out Friday or Saturday night (probably Saturday) to grab dinner some place, with anyone welcome to come along and hang out that wants to. You want to shoot the s**t about the comics, characters, or just the technical aspects that go into making comics, here's your chance. You want to pick my brain, feel free. It'll be a little fireside chat.

So mark July 20 - 22 on your calendars. We look forward to seeing you there.

Moving again with new comics
Wow, it's been a while. Crazy personal whatnot has kept me from updating my journal here, DA, or (more importantly) my comics. Everything is fine though, and much better now that I finally have my beautiful girl here with me. She's pushing me to get back in the swing again on my stories, and thanks to that I've updated my site with about an issue worth of new pages for my comics Sune and Endless Winter. Hardcopies of the comics, with extra pages, should start going to print again within the next month or so through Comixpress, who already has the first issues Endless Winter and Sune for sale off their site. It makes me pleased to get moving again, as I was starting to feel a bit stagnant.

Otakon
Looks like, out of nowhere, I'll be headed to Otakon. I got the invite last Saturday and spent most of this week working out the details with the con staff, trying to wrangle a day off from work (which isn't easy when you're a manager and no one on your crew can stand-in for you), and putting together material for a table and trying to get reprints of my book run off and shipped to me in time.

Assuming all goes as planned, one of my girls and I will hit the road in my Maddy Thursday evening and drive through the night. Friday I'll mostly be in the Artists' Alley with prints and copies of my book, Sune, much as I will be on Saturday, save for when I do my workshop on panel work/sequentials and inking around noon. Sunday we skip and head back down so we can both be back at our jobs on Monday.

This should be a crazy week.

Yay...got my Mustang
I got my 2005 Mustang GT.

Black exterior, red and black leather interior.

Course, I'm the bank's meatpuppet for the next couple years, but, eh...

Spent the last couple weeks doing nothing but looking for excuses to be on the road, even if just to take people up to the store.

Riddick
Break time. While putting in a job application at THE BASTION OF EVIL in an attempt to further raise money for my dream car (thus my having SOLD MY SOUL for said car should I end up with aforementioned employment), I picked up Dark Fury and Riddick. It's about time I got them, being that I was the one that introduced most people I know to Pitch Black in the first place, and I still haven't seen these sequels.
It's theaters. I hate theaters with a passion. The loud kids, the babies, the phones, the seats too thinly-cushioned and too tightly crammed together for someone 6'4" to comfortably sit in for two hours...

And now that Lost is over and I have an hour until Smallville...

Woot, Dark Fury (and then I'll have to stop being a slacker and get back to work on pages).

Otakucon
Man, I'm in a hell of a crunch, and here I am burning time by flitting around message boards like a dolt.

It looks as if I'll be attending OtakuCon, a new convention in Miami, Florida, next month. I just got the letter last week asking me if I'd like to attend, and though I've spent most of my summer time either without a scanner or dodging hurricanes and face a serious shortage of material, I think I will. I'm going to try and get two if not three issues of my comics, Endless Winter and Sune, printed up in time, if the printers ever get back to me, and throw together a few prints.

Barely a month away. I really should know better than screwing around online in situations like this.
