Tonight, I watched the Chinese version of Hamlet. I know crazy, right? It wasn't exactly the same, but it had so many parallels that I couldn't help but think of Hamlet; especially after reading Hamlet for English last quarter. The movie is called "The Banquet" and it stars Zhang Ziyi, who still annoys me. You'd think that after all of the movies that I've seen her in, that I would start to like her, but I haven't. She seems to annoy me even more in every movie. It's not that she's a bad actress or anything, I don't actually know why I don't particularly like her. Maybe it's because she's always supposed to be the most beautiful woman and there are other beautiful women in the movie that are just as beautiful as she is. *Sigh.* That's a pretty awful reason to not like someone, but that's the only reason I have so far.
Well, I digressed. Back to the movie. All of the main signs of Hamlet are there,: Uncle who murders the king and steals the throne, emo son/prince that's into the arts, play that reveals the murder of the former king, assasination attempts on prince, and death of the royal family. The only main trait of the story missing is the Ghost charater, which more or less symbolized through the former king's suit of armor. I actually don't reccomend seeing it if you don't like Chinese movies, only if you are a Hamlet buff. It's funny because even the way the 1st emperor was killed is the same way Hamlet's father was killed; poison in the ear. I can't wait to tell my English teacher.
