Cornered
She cowers in the corner
Arms wrapped around her head
To shield her from the vicious words
A frightened child
Who grew up knowing only shame, and hate, and anger
Wounded constantly by those she loved
Until at last
She learned to hide,
Her thoughts,
Her feelings,
Her very self.
So long ago now,
But still present
For somewhere deep inside
She still believes the words they said
Stupid, ugly, clumsy, worthless.
Branded a failure
Time after time.
Somehow she learned to love, and trust
But not to love herself no matter how she tries
Her spirit is still cornered.
Held prisoner by memories she can't let go
Trapped by the parents she still holds inside.
She cowers in the corner
Arms wrapped around her head
To shield her from the vicious words
A frightened child
Who grew up knowing only shame, and hate, and anger
Wounded constantly by those she loved
Until at last
She learned to hide,
Her thoughts,
Her feelings,
Her very self.
So long ago now,
But still present
For somewhere deep inside
She still believes the words they said
Stupid, ugly, clumsy, worthless.
Branded a failure
Time after time.
Somehow she learned to love, and trust
But not to love herself no matter how she tries
Her spirit is still cornered.
Held prisoner by memories she can't let go
Trapped by the parents she still holds inside.
