About living in New York, but not the City. |

As many of you already know, Mur is a natural-born New Yorker. I live in Orange County, which is about an hour north of the city.
We get snow three months a year. December, January, and Febuary. January is really when it gets dumped down, so much that it takes hours upon hours to shovel a driveway, and you can't do it while it's still snowing, or you'll never finish. Oh yes, and I know a lot of people who live in the southern states and California and various warm places around the world that think oh, "Snow! It must be so pretty!" Let me tell you now. Snow doesn't really exist after it's stopped falling from the sky. It's slush and ice. And let me assure you, slush is not fun at 6am when you're going down the street to the bus stop in the dark, nor is ice.
The city. I live about an hour north of the city, and yes it is awesome, but let me assure you that the last time I went down there was last July to see Phantom of the Opera. Why? Everything down there is freaking expensive, and not to mention, it takes forever to get anywhere, what with all the commuters (most live here and in Rochester, etc).
After 9/11, people started POURING out of the city. Living expenses like, doubled around here, and the school got overcrowded. Not all city kids are scum, but maybe they just turn into it when they move into suburbia, or maybe it's just the ones I've met that are scum. Oh well, let me explain a few things about them to you. A lot of them seem to think that they're cool cause they're from the city and know how to live here. I seriously hate that because hello, this is surburbia, NOT the city. Here there is the Woodbury Commons (oh how I hate the commons, and once you've worked there, you'll hate it too, just because of how rude the tourists are to you cause you're an American.) and school, work (if you're smart enough to have a job), and home. That's about it. There's nowhere to hang out, and there's nowhere to go.
The pizza. OH MY GOD. Let me tell you this right now, New York pizza is the BEST. Pizza Hut didn't release their special "Big New Yorker Pizza" for no reason. There's usually at least five or six small business pizza places within two towns. Right around here there's Big Mike's, which I say is the best, there's Mario's, Harriman Pizzeria, Amendola's Pizza, and Planet Pizza. So if you didn't want to go to a staple pizza place, like Pizza Hut or Domino's, there's plenty of places to choose from. Pizza is definitely the best thing about living in New York. If you're just coming here to visit too, be sure to stop at some small business pizza place for some of the best pizza you've ever had.
Chinese take-out. Okay, so some call it fake chinese food. Oh well, whatever you want to call it, it's de-lish. We've got a lot of Chinese take-out places around here as well. They're great, really great. If you don't like one, hop in your car, drive about a mile to another, ang try another. It's just like pizza around here, and it's not something to be missed.
That about sums it up for a little while. I could rant and rave about how horrible the schools' art programs are, but I'm not going to. So remember kiddies, if you're just visiting, and you're going to Woodbury Commons, be nice to the people that work there. They're pretty damn unhappy to see you and just want you to buy crap and leave. mrgreen
