My favorite stories are the ones where an average, everyday human gets sucked into a world unlike their own, filled with adventure and strange sights and things they thought were impossible. Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, the Chronicles of Narnia, the Wizard of Oz, Neverwhere. In all of these stories, the protagonist(s) is/are transported to somewhere fantastic. What I don't understand is why they spend the whole story trying to get back to the boring world they came from.
I'm avoidant by nature, an escapist. I stay in my room, immersing myself in the internet or fantasy novels, wishing I could have the chance to follow the protagonists to new worlds. I'm a depressed 19 year old who fears for the future of their country and the world, and there's nothing I wouldn't give to be whisked away to fairyland - or, barring that, fall asleep and not wake up until everything is better.
I know if I were Alice, I would never have left Wonderland.
