LONDON (Reuters Life!) - Britain's love affair with nursery rhymes is cooling, with parents telling a new survey that they are too old-fashioned to engage their children, a trend which educationalists say could damage reading skills. It's just like reading a new word in a sentence, expect the rhymes are specifically designed to help you figure out the meaning. Preschoolers commonly notice differences in skin color and other physical characteristics. It's true that the nursery rhymes brought to America from England often reflected horrible happenings like wars and executions. I remember having it read to me as a child.....and reading it to my own children, over and over..not to mention all the other Nursery Rhymes of Yore. As the reader can see, the nursery rhyme was used to parody the royal and political events and people of the day. By exposing kids to the joy of nursery rhymes, they can learn to appreciate music at a young age.
There are many versions of this popular English rhyme in which Little Johnny asks rain to come on Saturday, on April day, on Christmas day and so on. The oldest version goes back to the 17th century! I found this so interesting myself as I researched it. Here I thought I would be writing about some simple but entertaining rhymes and had no idea what meaning I would really find. As if by magic, just as finished the lyrics the tiny ladybug flew off - probably to go save what was left of her burning house! From funny to educative there have been so many famous rhymes indexed and preserved in libraries for generations. I remember it with hand movements and loved it. Surely children were never scared by these rhymes. Traditional songs are those that have stood the test of time, and were probably enjoyed by your parents; maybe even their grandparents.
