I run this race
alone with myself
I stumble and fall
And I catch myself
I pick myself up
and I continue on
as I run in last place

I see them ahead
the others in this race
sometimes they run in two
othertimes in three or more
but they always have
someone there to help

I run in last place
alone with myself
No one there
No friends to aid
I stumble again
and fall to my knees
I hit the ground hard
and I cry out in pain
I do as i always do
and climb to my feet
but my legs give out
and I fall back to the ground

I close my eyes
and grit my teeth
I am tired and beaten
I can not run this race
it is too much
for me to bear
I am about to give up
as I open my eyes
I see people around me
and I don't know why
I question their presence
are they here ro take me
from this race I can't run

They reach down
and take my arms
and ever so gently
they lift me to my feet
they dust me off
and start to run
slowly at first
making sure I was with them

I don't know what's happening
my mind is a whirlwind
why did they stop
what is there reason
Their presence gives me strength
We start to run faster
I notice they stumble and fall
Just as I did
But they did not leave
the fallen one behind
they stopped and picked him up
just as they did with me
I realize now
that these people are different
I begin to help them
just as they helped me
I feel accepted
I feel good

I run this race
No longer alone
But with these people
whom I can call friends
I run this race with them
to the very end
