Flenn has been on the run from many different mercenary groups that have been paid to kill him. This is one of the many times that Flenn has escaped the grasps of Death itself...
Flenn knelt in the moist dirt. The ropes that bound his wrists were tight and irritable. He flexed his fingers to keep the blood flowing in them. In front of him stood Shaner, one of his former friends at the Blademark Academy. The cold tip of a sword told Flenn Kaiser, another old friend, stood behind him ready to execute Flenn in an instant. Old ties of friendship were mere wisps to the loyalty to House Deneith.
"Forgive us, old friend. We?ll make it quick." Shaner half-spat. He seemed almost too happy he was part of the execution.
"Go to Hell, you b*****d." Flenn snapped then spat at Shaner's feet. The cold tip of Kaiser's blade lifted upward.
"Meet you there?" Shaner snarled. Flenn snarled back and shot up to his feet, slamming the back of his head into Kaiser's face. The crack of his nose was distraction enough. Shaner went for the sword at his hip, but with Kaiser's mental block on Flenn gone, he sent a numbing cold into Shaner's thoughts. The man stiffened and his hands went to his temples.
Flenn reached backward, Placed his palms on either side of the blade's flats, and wrenched it from Kaiser's hands. Utilizing the pulling force, Flenn turned it into a stab and sank the tip of the blade into Shaner's collarbone. His face contorted and Flenn pushed deeper. Flenn then released the sides and drug the cord tying his hand together along the edge, cutting it. As his hands passed up the blade, he grabbed the hilt and withdrew it from Shaner and turned to pierce Kaiser deep in his throat. The soldier's eyes rolled back and his body went limp. Flenn slowly pulled it from the man's jugular and pointed the blade at Shaner, who held his collar, his face wracked with pain.
Flenn's strained expression faded and wide smile appeared.
"I will meet you there, but you're going first!" Flenn watched mercilessly as his stolen sword easily removed the soldier called Shaner's head. His body dropped to the ground while Flenn went to the tent.
Quickly donning his chain shirt, he tied his belt on hastily. Realizing his robe and eye weren't with the rest of his stuff, he tore a strip of brown cloth from a blanket in the tent and wrapped it around his head, covering the empty eye socket. Flenn drew one of his shadesteel swords and peaked into the darkness of the forest.
He knew the Karrnathi forests very well, but now it was in enemy territory. A snapping twig whipped Flenn's attention.
A mounted figure stepped into sight. His back was to Flenn. Thinking as quickly as he could, Flenn bolted behind a tree. Two more horses bearing riders cantered in next to their companion.
They seem to have found Kaiser's and Shaner's bodies because they all drew their swords and began to look into the forest intently. Flenn silently drew his second sword and inverted both. The flat of his blades against his arms, Flenn peered around the trunk to see the marshal's positions. Time seemed to stop as scenarios flooded his thoughts. Different attacks and their results began to compare in his mind.
The horses adjusted the way they stood on the slightly sloped hill and Flenn saw an opening. A dagger would have helped better, but his swords would be good enough.
Reaching out with his psionic ability, Flenn sent an enormous fear into the horses. The simple mind was easier to tap into that the guards.
All three horses began to whinny continuously. Just as one reared up, Flenn let his mind flow into the time stream and he blurred across the cold ground. The stirred horses slowed and seemed to become sluggish.
As he came to the first mounted marshal, Flenn jumped high into the air and sank his blade deep into the man's skull. His burst of speed ended and the movement of the world around him sped back up to normal speed. The second soldier shouted as he saw Flenn turn to him. Bringing his sword up into a high sweep, Flenn easily knocked it to the side with his unused sword. Placing both feet firmly on the horse's back. Flenn pulled his blade free and sank his second into the next soldier's chest.
The third marshal came behind Flenn, sweeping his blade across Flenn's back. The magic-treated chain sparked with no damage, but the force knocked Flenn off the horses back.
Hitting the ground with a loud thud, the breath was forced from Flenn?s lungs. Grinning, the third guard prodded the dead soldier's horses with his sword until they moved from between him and Flenn. Struggling to retain his breath, Flenn could sense the last soldier dismount and walk slowly up to him. Reversing the point, the marshal brought the sword high to strike the killing blow. One moment he was watching the tip of his sword came down to Flenn's back, the next his sword was deep in the mud and his opponents hand was in front of his face.
Before the marshal could even imagine withdrawing his sword from the ground, darkness washed over him. He tried to scream as he felt the cold ebon energy flow into his eye sockets, nose, and mouth.
Then all went black.
Flenn's chest heaved from his drop. The amount of energy he used also strained him. Both his swords lay on the ground and he knelt between them.
"Good bye, my brothers. I will be with you soon." Flenn looked to the horizon, picking his blades up and sheathing them.
