Binge Drinking: A Risk for Teenagers
Liquor stores, taverns, and alcoholic beverage companies make alcohol consumption appear appealing and fun. It is easy for a person to get caught up in a social scene with lots of peer pressure. Inevitably, one of the biggest areas of peer pressure, especially with teens, is drinking.

A number of people, particularly the youth, do not normally think about the detrimental side of alcohol consumption. Many individuals do not know that excessive drinking can lead to loss of concentration, memory lapses, mood changes, and other problems that could have an effect on their day-to-day life.

When it comes to heavy drinking, the expression "binge drinking" comes to mind. To most people, binge drinking brings to mind self-destruction and unbridled drinking bout lasting for at least a couple of days throughout which time the heavily inebriated drinker drops out by not going to work, ignoring responsibilities, wasting money, and engaging in other hazardous behaviors such as fighting or risky sex.

Binge drinking impairs judgment, so hard drinkers are more likely to take risks they might not have when they're sober. They may drink and drive, which then raises the possibility of being involved in motor vehicle collisions. Driving a vehicle isn't the sole motor skill that's impaired, though. Walking is also more difficult when intoxicated. In 2000, approximately one third of pedestrians 16 and older that were killed in traffic crashes were drunk. People who are inebriated also take other chances they might not ordinarily take when they're not drunk. For example, people who have impaired judgment may have unsafe sex, placing them at greater risk of a sexually transmitted disease (STD) or unwanted pregnancy.

Research studies also reveal that people who binge-drink throughout high school are more likely to become overweight and obese and have hypertension by the time they are 24. Only one standard beer contains about 150 calories, which adds up to a lot of calories if someone drinks four or five beers a night. Some research studies have suggested that people who binge-drink like those who have three or more instances of binge drinking in 2 weeks have several of the symptoms of alcohol dependence.

For teens, it can be difficult for certain of them to talk with adults about these issues, so an alternative person to talk to could be a trusted friend or older sibling. Drinking an excessive amount might be the result of social pressures, and occasionally it helps to know there are others who have gone through the very same thing. A supportive friend or adult may help one to avoid pressure situations, stop drinking, or get therapy. There will always be someone who can help and put a halt on this problem.

Binge drinking is not just hazardous to the drinker, but to the folks around him or her.
