Family Fun in River View Park, Buellton, California
California travelers who drive through the Central Coast on Highway 101 often find Buellton an easy spot to exit, eat, and get gas. There are also some quick recreational activities available for such people. Ostrichland is but a half mile to the East on Highway 246, while River View Park offers a number of pleasurable outdoor activities just 1.5 miles to the West on the same route. A stop at this park enables one to access childrens playground equipment, walk a dog, or eat meals in an attractive outdoor setting that offers barbecue grills.

Buellton is Conveniently Located for Travelers of Highway 101

Highway 101 is the major route traveling north and south through the Central Coast of California. In the Santa Ynez Valley, it exits in Buellton. This small city has been a traditional place to stop for gas and quick food. The North bound exit ramp, which is used when traveling up from Santa Barbara, has even been shown in the film Sideways.

Outdoor activities are feasible in Buellton much of the year. The winters in this Mediterranean Climate are generally quite mild, with cold weather at its worst generally being occasional bouts of highs in the mid 50s F. The area receives some rain from late fall through spring, but usually is sunny. The Santa Ynez Valley is rarely subject to the June gloom type of fog that penetrates coastal cities such as Santa Barbara. The summers can be warm, but it is a dry heat and usually under 95 F. There is almost always a cooling breeze in the afternoon and evenings.

Travel East on Highway 246 past the entrance ramps for Highway 101. Look for the Buellton Town Center on the right.

Trails Suitable for Walking, Running, and Bicycling Abound in River View Park

A number of trails run through the park. They are wide and suitable for both pedestrians and bicyclists. Contained within the park is the nascent Santa Ynez Botanic Garden, which extends to the Santa Ynez River. The trails in the garden are laid out alongside descriptive plaques. This makes for an enjoyable walk or run, especially if one is interested in natural history. Many of the plants are evergreen and remain attractive year-round. Thickets of plants that shed their leaves for the winter still have a unique beauty.

River View Park is a multi-use park with playground equipment, picnic benches, and barbecue grills. The Botanic Garden is pleasant to wander through, reading the plaques about the plants and local wildlife. For the more energetic, the park is a perfect place to run, ride a bicycle, or play basketball. It is also a lovely place to walk ones dog. Enjoyed by locals from around the Santa Ynez Valley, this park is just a few miles from Highway 101 and can be a respite for the weary traveler. It closes at dusk.
