Have you heard the saying, "You are what you eat?" Those words are full of truth. Proper nutrition is essential! What you put in your body will determine how you look and feel, and can either help or hurt you. Do you want to know what your body needs or how to make your self healthier inside and out? Read the following article for helpful suggestions to do just that:

Mom always said to eat your potato skins and apple peels. She was right. Though it's unclear whether, as she used to say "all the vitamins are in the skin," it is true that eating the peels of many fruits and vegetables provides the added nutrition of the food's fiber. Of course, it's important to thoroughly wash fruits and vegetables whose skin or peel you plan to eat - or better yet, if you can afford to, buy organic.

To have a healthy body it is important to watch the food that we eat. A good way to start the day in a healthy way is to eat fresh fruits. Food that should be avoided are donuts, pastries with coffee and croissants because all of these provide the body with a big amount of calories.

Be sure that your diet includes adequate levels of vitamin A. Vitamin A is important for healthy eyes and helps in the prevention of cataracts. It strengthens the mucous membranes that protect your soft tissues, which serve as a barrier against infection. Vitamin A is also important in the health of your bones and teeth.

Vitamin K is an advantageous nutrient that you can add to your body on a daily basis. This vitamin is very beneficial in reducing bruises and any imperfections that you may have on the skin. If you suffer from severe acne, vitamin K can help to reduce the redness from your bumps.

Always choose products with the most vitamins listed on the nutrition label. Choosing one product with more vitamins than another similar tasting product, will help your body build up your immune system, strengthen your bones and provide you many more health benefits, over a long period of time.

Eat broccoli. It is considered a superfood because one medium portion of broccoli has more Vitamin K than you need for the entire day. It also has about twice the daily requirement of vitamin C. These nutrients will help you build strong bones and could possibly reduce your risk of some cancers. In order to retain broccoli's nutritional content, steam it instead of boiling it or heating it in the microwave.

If you want to shorten your recovery time from illnesses, consume foods rich in zinc. Your immune system is given a boost when you eat foods that provide zinc, so you will recover quickly and resist future illness. If you need a zinc infusion, eat some peaches, wheat germ, pumpkin or strawberries. These foods also contain beneficial antioxidants.

As you can see, what you put into your body has a huge impact on how you feel and look! By following the above suggestions you will be healthier you. Remember, proper nutrition is essential! After all, "You are what you eat!"
