http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWOdbMk9t-I

Steve Pannell’s background is as eclectic as his flagship selection, which encompasses McLaren Vale stalwarts Grenache, Shiraz and Shiraz/Grenache but also an Adelaide Hills Nebbiolo. Pannell, a Western Australian, is the son of Dr Bill Pannell, founder of Margaret River’s MOSS WOOD and PICARDY WINES in Pemberton. Even so, he has avidly pursued winemaking options elsewhere, notably investing ten many years at HARDYS, the place he was chief red winemaker, but also functioning vintage at Domaine des COMTES LAFON in Burgundy, Chateau MOUTON ROTHSCHILD in Bordeaux and G.D. VAJRA in Barolo. In 2004, he struck out on his personal and has fast established a status for wines that skilfully mix ripe fruit and tannins with a sense of location. Careful vineyard selection (Pannell owns neither vineyards nor winery) and hands off winemaking in open major fermenters with all-natural yeast, hand plunging, no acidification and minimum use of new oak outcomes in foods pleasant wines of impeccable stability. The Shiraz Grenache, his strongest suit, is an sophisticated rendition of the mix with ample spice, ripe but present tannins and extraordinary freshness, even S.C. Pannell Vineyard in hard many years like 2007 and 2008. A floral Grenache devoid of an ounce of unwanted fat exemplifies Pannell’s consider on this assortment as “warm climate Pinot Noir.” The Shiraz shows comparable restraint and line when compared with McLaren Vale’s common style, which is typified by a generous mid-palate. However the Nebbiolo is extensively regarded as Australia’s ideal, youthful plantings can only get you so far. At this value point while it displays excellent varietal character, not least quite stern tannins, it lacks the finesse of similarly priced Italian counterparts. Only time will inform if Pannell’s carefully selected new clones will lower the gap. Aptly named entry degree Pronto red and white are soft, exuberant but interesting blends, simpler on each palate and pocket. In the functions, a blend of Touriga Nacional and Tempranillo. (SA)
