Two days back I came home from the office feeling lively and invigorated. All that altered. Do not misunderstand, it is not that I don't enjoy talking with my wife.

Upon picking up her check, she found it a bit light and did some investigating. As it turned out, the huge guy had altered the commission strategy without telling the sales associates. Commissions for year-long ad campaigns would be paid in the conclusion of the entire year, when all money was accumulated, instead of now, when the advertisements were sold. Now be careful, I'm not judging the validity of this commission plan. Think in regards to the way in which it was handled, although there might be perfectly valid motives for the change. Nobody who was changed was told in advance that this was under consideration or would happen. My wife was not the only person affected.

"Wait a second, there, large mouth," you might be thinking, "should you tell the salespeople this kind of stuff beforehand, they'll simply whine and shout and attempt to prevent it from happening." You are likely appropriate. I would like to ask you this, just how much work do you believe anybody in the publication got done they found out regarding the commission plan changes? I am not only discussing the salespeople. What's worse, now your workforce may sabotage the organization attempt to work off their frustrations, and feels betrayed. You have traded a little, manageable issue for a significant aggravation. You determine.

TELL THEM THE BAD NEWS IN ADVANCE

Rule number one is brought up by this. Whether you are dealing with salespeople, flooring- sweepers or doctors, anytime you as a supervisor need to create a decision that affects individuals lives, tell them well beforehand of the event taking place. At work, this typically impacts the worker's benefits or the pocketbook. I consulted a firm of over six hundred employees without telling the minions until they received their checks, where the longstanding Christmas bonus plan altered. A lot of people received hundreds less than they were anticipating, most of which was spent on Uncle Ed's new tie along with a fruitcake for cousin Zelda. Hundreds of people are not working while whining concerning this breach of religion, and I, an hourly paid consultant, spent extra time discovering concerning this event rather than working to the project I was hired for. The fastest loss of the Expectations Game that I ever did see.

TELL THEM WHY

Another direction communication issue that'll come back to bite on supervisors, CEOs, even special Project Managers is miscommunication. While I need my dog to do something, I give her simple, one-syllable orders. "Bear, sit! Bear, remain! Bear, come!" Extra words cause miscommunication. Problem: human beings are not dogs. We don't have tails to wag shower daily, and don't blindly obey. The human mind is constantly striving to find the answer to the never ending question--"Why?" People can not help it; it is in our nature. Look at what occurred in the Vietnam War, where soldiers -- the disciplined, regimented, and sequence-following breed of American citizen-- often fought because they were uncertain in their assignment, their purpose. Let us trust the Libyan disagreement isn't similarly mishandled.

Another rule of communication then, for those in power, would be to supply adequate information for the worker to reply, "Why?" Many organizations moved into a philosophy called Open Book Management because of this very reason. More difficulties are often caused by insufficient information than divulging those deep, dark company secrets. Look no further compared to the 2011 labor dispute involving the NFL and the Player's Association / Players. Allow the worker whining about his last pay raise that is meager see where the business 's cash went, that profits were down and that expenses may have grown. This may drive an improvement in performance more often than not. You may have great reasons not to share everything with employees; if they were in your position just provide them with enough information that enables them to draw similar conclusions even when your business is totally ethical.

CONVEY CONGRUENTLY

What about non-verbal communication? I am not referring to gesturing and tone here. That things is essential for better communcations at the same time. I'm referring to a more global part of direction communication that I'll just call congruency. This is the point where you walk the discussion of your message. This is vital to installing those management initiatives which will alter the business. Workers will see in seconds in case your message is belied by your actions. Not the most effective role model is the manager who preaches every Friday afternoon via text message to commitment in the 19th hole. You don't need to do everything you are the boss. You manage; they create. It simply means that you just definitely must show that if it is significant enough for them to do, it's important enough for you personally to support.

I have summarized three things in this specific article that managers needs to know about when communicating with subordinates. First, if your message changes individuals where they breathe and live, get it out sooner rather than later. Second, you should give people a reason why if you would like them IC plan to carry out your assignments. Lastly, act with the message which you project.

Many more guidelines exist to enable you to communicate effectively with employees. Know about these three to sailing a smoother, more effective company ship and you're going to go a long way.

SummaryThere are 3 Rules of Management Communication that Leaders need to master and heed--get the bad news out early, tell them 'why', and communicate congruently.
