Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 08
[Kitchen table 3--Exterior Minn Kota Maxxum Grounds, displaying the principle kinds taken upon them.]

Southeast Jeffreys. Off the southeast edge of Jeffreys, about 24 miles SE. from Boon Island, lies a piece of minn kota maxxum terrain having a challenging bottom ofsand and gravel, and stones, where depths slope out gradually in the 50-fathom soundings near the principal body from the bank to the 90-fathom mark farther out. This area is an excellent ground for haddock and cod in the winter months and springtime plus a hake soil in Mar. This sportfishing location is about 3 or 4 miles sq . and is bounded on all but the american side by muddy base, which is of little benefit as a minn kota maxxum soil. Usually there exists good haddocking in March on the outside of Jeffreys, on its southeastern edge and then in the cove between it and Tillies in 70 and 60 fathom depths over a broken and muddy bottom part. This place lies SE ? from the Isle of Shoals, 27 miles to the centre.

This shoreline furnishes excellent mackerel minn kota maxxum while in most of the time of year when these minn kota maxxum are in northern waters. Basically no gill-netters operate here, the space to market simply being great and the chance of hard weather and the lack of safe harbor rendering it dangerous for small craft. From this extend of shore (mostly from off Chatham) there were landed at Boston in the year 1923, 66 fares with a full of 1,797,826 pounds worth $76,875.

The gill-net fishery on these grounds is of great and continuously growing relevance, though earlier this fishery was almost entirely maintained by trawlers and hand-liners. Of late the bigger part of the haddock catch is taken from the "otter-trawl" method, this equipment being operated by steamers of considerable size and upon the more distant reasons, such as Georges Bank, the South Funnel, and the Western Bank. The identical change to sportfishing grounds farther overseas has to a great extent taken place in the fleet of larger sailing vessels, hence leaving Jeffreys and other inshore banks towards the smaller create; except that, with all the high prices of haddock and cod in the wintertime, it is often rewarding for these bigger vessels to work off to near-by banks for starters set and return to slot the same day.

A compact shoal in the western section of the Cove of Jeffreys, getting 50 fathoms over a base of azure clay and rocks and rising from your 60 and 70 fathom soundings about it, is about 1? mls long by about 3/4 mile broad. This shoal is SSE. from Boon Island 15 miles. It is actually a winter soil for haddock and cod.

Fippenies Bank. This consists of two shoals averaging 80 fathoms in depth having a channel of 90 fathoms between them. These run NE. and SW., the eastern shoal about 8 kilometers long by 1 distance wide, the western about 50 % as sizeable. Fippenies bears E. 1/4 S. from Thacher Island, distant 61 miles; from Portland Lightship, SE. by S. ? S, 57 miles to the european point of the northern shoal in 35 fathoms. Your budget is nearly 10 miles long NE. and SW. and averages 4? miles broad. The bottom is ofgravel and pebbles, and clay, having depths around much of the shoal of approximately 30 fathoms but also from 36 to 60 fathoms. It is fished by the shore fleet in the spring and early on summer. The minn kota maxxum and conditions are as on Cashes Bank. Previously twice as a lot of haddock were taken right here as on Cashes or on Platts Bank, but this has modified in recent years. Halibut are undertaken here in reasonable numbers in 45 to 55 fathom depths inJune and July, and August on the "black pea gravel" from the european and the southern area of edge. The "white gravel" on the to the north shoal is of little account being a minn kota maxxum ground, because it is composed generally of the seashells of dead scallops.

Harvey Blacks Ridge. This can be SE. ? S. from the lightship off Portland, distant 42 miles, and SE. from New Ledge, distant 8 miles. From Glovers Rock, off Modest Point, Me. this ridge lies SE. by S. ? S. 41 miles. It extends within an ENE. and WSW. path about 4 miles very long by I mile broad. Depths average 70 to 100 fathoms over a base of discolored clay and gravel. Cod are taken right here all the 12 months. Haddock are found in the deep water in the spring: cusk each of the year in deep h2o, together with hake in summertime, also about the muddy underside in deep water. Pollock and other surface-education minn kota maxxum are found in their correct season.

Evidently the great quantity of cod on this terrain is due to the great quantity of shrimps and delicate-shelled crabs found on the muddy base and on the rocks that compose this ground. There seem to be many of these deep-water grounds between and about the shoaler reasons, as in close proximity to Cashes, Fippenies, and Jeffreys, which apparently serve as fairways over that the schools of hake, cod, and cusk, move from Georges Lender into the Gulf of Maine in the spring of the year.

Stellwagen Bank also called Center Bank. This separates Massachusetts Bay through the open drinking water of the Gulf of Maine and expands from around Cape Ann nearly to Cape Cod. The center of this ground bears S by E ? E from Thacher Island and N by W ? W from Highland Light, Cape Cod. The The southern part of Part of the Lender is faraway 5? miles from Race Point Cape Cod, along with its northwest prong reaches to within 12 or 15 miles of Eastern Point Cape Cod. The shoaler portion, with depths from 9? to 19 fathoms, is 17? miles long in a N by W and S by E direction and has a width of 4 kilometers. This portion is soft sandy but the eastern slope, in depths of from 25 to 55 fathoms, consists of coarse yellow sand gravel and pebbles. On this gravelly slope haddock and cod are already taken plentifully over a long term of years, the cod in the fall and springtime and the haddock in the winter months. Around the southern stop of the banking institution and in between this and Race Position cod are plentiful in fall and wintertime. The full bank is another mackerel ground when the minn kota maxxum are in these seas, the best inside the season averaging to be from July 15 through September.

John Dyers Ridge. This is 14 miles S. by E. from Toothakers Ridge, 40 kilometers S. by E. from Monhegan Isle, and 7 miles NE. from Cashes Bank. It is about 5 miles long by 2 miles large, lying in a ENE. and WSW. route. The water is shoalest around the western edge, where come from 45 to 50 fathoms over a sharp, pebbly bottom part; thence the ground slopes to the NE. into 80 and 75 fathoms more than a hard, gravelly, and dirty bottom, in all other directions falling off sharply to 90 and 100 fathom soundings over a dirty bottom.

GEORGES Place

Off Newburyport and N. and SW. from the Isle of Shoals are gill-netting grounds that are significantly used. Trawling and netting are maintained, beginning in 40 fathoms in February and March and working off to 70 fathoms off Salisbury Bench in May. Cod are on this ground about two weeks in October and then in February and March are found in abundance away Boars Head. Hake exist here all the fall and are found all along the southeast side of such grounds in depths of 45 to 60 fathoms. A certain amount of halibut may be consumed in most yrs at different points on a bottom of hard pea gravel in early spring and earlier summer in 35 to 65 fathoms. In most years a large amount of mackerel is taken on Jeffreys, particularly so in 1925. Herring, also, are often abundant here in "herring years".

Big Ridge (near Cashes Bank). It is a broken and rocky part of bottom operating from the hint of the southeastern part of the terrain, at about 10 miles S. through the buoy on Ammens Rock and about 82 miles SE. ? S. through the lightship at Portland, to a point about 20 miles S. by E. from the buoy named. Its length is not to be stated definitely, in fact it is probably in excess of here displayed. The size averages about 1? to 2 a long way. Depths are from 65 to 80 fathoms and more, raising gradually as it goes outside the main financial institution. The varieties and their conditions of great quantity here are as on Cashes Bank. Perhaps this is much more of a cod and cusk ground than is the main part of Cashes Bank, the cusk becoming particularly ample during Mar and April. Halibut also are found here in June and May in from 50 to 60 fathoms water. A considerable amount of the fish shown inside the table of your catch in the area included in Cashes Bank may well have come using this piece of terrain.

Cusk are plentiful right here in the spring, with a few in the tumble. Cod are taken each of the year about, the Spring school being the largest. Hake are most numerous Inside the drop and springtime months, and haddock are not common however are most several in winter.

East side of Cape Cod. The sea bottom off the east aspect of Cape Cod is principally sandy and slopes away from gradually from the beach, getting to depths of 30 to 40 fathoms at 5 to 7 miles from land. Under Chatham the slope is even more slow. Within these limits very good catches of cod are taken from time to time, and to a less extent the same is true of haddock. Far away from the shore, in from 40 to 80 fathoms and coming from a point 8 or 10 miles from the Highlands of Cape Cod to another stage lying 20 miles or even more SSE. from Chatham Lighting fixtures, is a continuous stretch of excellent haddock grounds for winter minn kota maxxum. The deep normal water off Chatham furnishes superb hake fishing in slip and summertime.

A comparatively hidden and evidently as but unnamed ridge lies E. by S. 15 kilometers from the buoy on Cashes Ledge, which is reported to be great fishing ground, especially for cod and cusk. With both varieties present in this article the year close to, the cod is reported to be most ample in Apr and May: and also the cusk, as they are the tip on these outlying ridges, appears in largest numbers in Mar and April. Haddock seem to be considerably rare right here.

Lying about SE. by S. ? 5. from the Isle of Shoals 20 a long way, 13 kilometers S. by W. from your whistling buoy on Jeffreys, and 43 miles S. by W. from Cape Elizabeth is a broken bit of bottom experiencing from 75 to 85 fathoms of water over it, which is a haddock ground from January to April along with a cusk and hake ground all the year.

The Ridge (around the southern element of Fippenies). This can be SSE. from the light-ship at Portland 75 miles and contains a bottom of discolored mud and pebblespebbles and depths of 75 to 95 fathoms. Cod are present within Jan and Dec; cusk the entire year around, but most numerous in February and March; haddock in January and December; hake in October and September. The length of this bank is from 4 to 5 mls and the breadth somewhat less than 2 mls. It is based on an ENE. and WSW. direction.

Morris Ledge. This is situated eastward of Chatham and is also a favorite floor for certain cod fishermen in the course of spring and early summertime. Schooners and small create operate here.

Howard Nunans Ridge. Of similar character to the previous, this soars 4 kilometers inside of and parallel into it, lying 14 miles from Cape Porpoise on the same bearings (SE. by S. ? S.). This seems to be made up of two shoals, the northern soaring to 50 fathoms of water over a difficult, broken underside about 3 miles very long by 1 mile wide, deepening southwesterly to a slim, muddy gully, where are 80 fathoms, and increasing again to 60 fathoms over stones and damaged ground. The complete ground is approximately 8 miles long with average widths of from 1 to 1? miles. This floor furnishes very good cod sportfishing and haddocking from the fall and early winter months and once more in the spring months.

This banking institution is now primarily an Italian boat ground and is employed by small craft from Boston and Gloucester. Gill-netting here is especially extensive in November and December, mostly for pollock. Netters operate about 22 miles SSE. from Eastern Reason for 22 to 25 fathoms on a tough bottom. Excellent pollock attracts are made in 25 to 40 fathoms around the eastern and southeastern slopes within the latter element of November and early December. Haddock are here from November 1 to March 1 and from Apr 20 to May 15. Cod are present all the 12 months, the largest university occurring in the course of August, October and September. It is a cusk soil from Nov to Mar in the deeper water. What seems a somewhat uncommon occurrence during these later years was the look of a considerable university of halibut on the northern slope of Stellwagen throughout the last half of April 1926, a number of small craft getting from 2,000 to 3,000 weight in their fares.

It was considered one of the most effective minn kota maxxum grounds for cod and haddock in the Gulf of Maine, but the haddock catch here has dropped off lately. Hake also are very ample during the summer season and often throughout October around the muddy bottom part near the side. Inside 100 fathoms, on the "punkin" bottom part of stones and pea gravel, near the dirt, haddock are found from Dec to March. Cod, pollock, and cusk occur from May to October, the former on the rocky and gravelly portions, the second on the deeply soundings, together with the Northeast Optimum the best summertime ground. This is an specially good slip and winter season terrain for haddock. Halibut are usually found in 35 fathoms (tiny minn kota maxxum) from September through Nov; also In spring and early summer time. This soil is fished by vessels from Cape Cod, Size., to Cutler, Me., mainly by trawling, some hands-upholster, but no gill netting of value as yet.

Expected E. in the buoy on Ammens Rock and roll about 12 miles is situated a ridge that rises from the 100 to 120 fathom depths about it into a depth of about 80 fathoms over a base of crackedground and mud, and seashells. This shoaler piece is some 3 mls long. N. by E. and S. by NW., by 1 mile wide. It furnishes good minn kota maxxum for cod, hake, and cusk in the spring, Apr being the best season.

About the inner areas of this ground, particularly, the gill-net fleet operates extensively, mainly from the full and spring, on northwest Jeffreys 8 to 12 miles E. and SE. from Thacher Island, where the underside is yellow sand and stones. Other gill-netting grounds are 8 to 15 miles NE. by E. from Thacher Isle in 22 fathoms on the hard bottom part of soil and mixed material of sand and gravel. The Cove of Jeffreys, NE. by E. 12 to 15 miles from Thacher Isle, is a preferred haddock terrain in the spring (Apr 20 to May 15) in 45 to 70 or even 80 fathoms, though gill nets are not typically fished in additional than 50 fathoms due to the, weight in the nets inside the deeper water. In the spring (in April and could), the haddock are available in on Scantum, 10 mls NNE. from Thacher Tropical island between Jeffreys Ledge as well as the Isle of Shoals, with a broken bottom part of rocks and azure clay in 55 to 70 fathoms.

Clay Ridge. At various details about the corners of Jeffreys Ledge are small separate ridges, which in their season are good minn kota maxxum reasons. The present piece of ground is placed 26 miles S. by W. from the lightship at Portland, which course and distance provide us towards the northern advantage. There is a 50-fathom shoal of small sizing upon it, but somewhere else soundings regular from 65 to 70 fathoms across a bottom of hard clay-based. The length of the earth is about 4 miles NNE. and SSW., and the breadth about 1 mile. This furnishes great haddocking in January, Feb. and March. the latter month showing the most effective fishing.

Fifty-five Fathom Bunch. West of Cashes Bank can be a rocky ridge extending ENE. and WSW. about 4 miles and achieving a width of about 1 mile. This can be mainly a cod floor, the conditions for the types being as on Cashes Bank.

Outer Crab Ledge. The center lies about 14 miles ESE from Chatham Lights. It extends about 5 or 6 miles in a N. and S. direction and is also about 1 mile wide. Depths operate from 19 to 23 fathoms; the base is difficult. The angling is principally for cod from the winter, springtime and fall. Vessel minn kota maxxum the following is principally in the spring.

Another major ridge, paralleling the 100-fathom curve of Georges Bank at about 20 mls N. than it, lies SE by S from the buoy on Cashes Ledge, 40 miles to the center; SE by S 110 a long way from Portland Lightship; ESE 92 miles from Cape Ann to its western conclusion, and E. by S. ? S. through the ship at Boston 100 miles. This ridge also is of somewhat indefinite place, being maybe 20 mls long inside an ESE by WNW course by 1? to three a long way wide. Seemingly depths are fairly consistent from 85 to 95 fathoms, the base of the ridge being of coarse black colored sand and having blue dirt in the greater area around it. This is said to be a good cod and cusk ground the entire year round.

The Cod Ridge (formerly Exterior Harris Soil). This is NE. through the Northeast Optimum of New Ledge, distant 7 miles. It extends inside an ENE. and WSW. route, the ground narrowing and the drinking water deepening towards the eastward, the shoal ground having 45 fathoms over a bottom of small pebbles and fine black gravel and yellow sand, depths increasing in every other guidelines to 100 fathoms around the mud and sloping off of somewhat steeply, especially on the southeast side, where the decline is very sharp. The length of the ground is about 5 miles, the width 1 mile. It becomes an all-the-year cod ground, the season of greatest abundance being from May 1 to December. The haddock are usually In their greatest phone numbers here from January 1 to April. Apparently no large number of cusk or hake are taken here around the ridge, perhaps because the normal water is not deep enough for that former, with the exception of the small seafood, that happen to be of small value for the fishermen; along with the ground is not really muddy adequate for the latter species. Both species, however, are normally found about the ends in the serious water, the cusk in the sharpest, most challenging part of the base (perhaps most popular in Feb . and March), the hake, as usual, in the muddy parts about it.

On the ledgecod and haddock, and cusk are consumed in the full spring and winterwinter, perhaps and spring redecorating the best minn kota maxxum. There are also more or less pollock, and hake constitute a crucial part of the find. In individuals seasons when herring make their appearance within these waters the seiners make good catches here, generally of food minn kota maxxum, as the sizeable herring are termed through the trade. The mackerel, also, appear on these grounds and also on the smaller reasons nearer to shoreline to westward and northward in good-sized universities, usually from July 1 through Sept. For many years the haddock catch from this lender has been of considerable importance, and this statement remains real for recent years as well.

A small cove makes for a shorter distance into the western aspect of Jeffreys Ledge at about 20 miles from Boon Tropical island in a SE. by S. ? S. path. The bottom from the cove is broken and muddy, with depths of around 60 fathoms. Thence, the soil slopes away to the oral cavity, where the edges about the entry ways are difficult and have 75 and 70 fathom depths. These rocky locations are cusk grounds inJanuary and February, and Mar, during which weeks the cove itself generally furnishes great haddock angling. Outdoors these depths the water deepens westward spanning a muddy base, where come from 80 to 90 and even 100 fathoms of water. Minn Kota Maxxum this is mainly by trawl and gill nets.

The Shoal Ground, stretching out easterly from Thacher Tropical isle, has depths from twenty to thirty fathoms more than a bottom of sand and gravel. This area is about 15 miles long by 5 a long way wide and is an important pollock ground with their spawning time as well as a good fall cod-sport fishing ground. It is about 12 miles E. by N. from Thacher Island to its center and 21 a long way SE. by S. from the Isle of Shoals. Flounder draggers also operate right here on the shoal ground and all sorts of around Thacher Island but mostly to eastward And southeastward.

Wild Kitty Ridge. Extremely heavy tides sweep around this ground, making it tough to haul items in angling on it, whence, it is said, will come the label. It is placed NNE from Highland Lighting, Cape Cod, 18 a long way to its the southern part of edge; SE ? S from Thacher Tropical island 31 mls; and is about 7? miles long in a southern and northern direction by about 3? miles vast. The bottom is hard, of damaged shells and sand, and depths are from 45 to 60 fathoms. There are 100 fathom depths inside of the terrain and from 100 to 110 fathoms outside of it. Apparently, it is really an all the 12 months ground for cod, cusk, and haddock, although but little fished at any time other than the winter seasons.

Pollock Rip Reasons. These rest between Pollock Rip Shovelful and Lightship Lightship and expand northward to Pollock Rip Shoal. These grounds are 3 mls long, E. and W., by 2 miles N. and S. The depths range from 4 to 12 fathoms. These are generally fished from Monomoy and also in stormy conditions from Chatham instead of going to the Crab Ledge. Late early in the year and at the outset of the drop the cod move inshore. In winter the cod depart Pollock Rip for the much deeper water.

A ridge lying NW. of Cashes Bank and almost parallel together with the main lender, only separated by a thin deep channel, is about 7 miles very long by 1? miles large. The types and the months are the same right here as on Cashes Financial institution.

Platt's Financial institution or New Ledge. This bears E. by N. ? N. from Thacher Tropical isle, from which the shoal portion of the ledge is distant 53 miles. From Portland Lightship it is 30 miles SSE. to the middle of the ground. The lender is about 12 miles lengthy, NE. and SW.. and about 8 miles wide. The western shoal, which is of small degree and rocky and which contains a considerable amount of old shells upon it, is positioned near the centre, its depth being 29 fathoms. Using this shoal towards the Southwest Top is about 11 miles SW. by S. Another shoal lies E. 3 miles, having about 30 fathoms over yellow sand and pea gravel, which is a good fall ground for haddock. East-northeast through the western shoal 3 a long way brings us to a rocky ridge, with spots of hard dirt and pebbles between, in 65-fathom level, which is a great winter cusk ground, these fish remaining in this article until April. Over a lot of the bank the depths cover anything from 30 to 35 fathoms with a underside of gravel and rocks. From your edge of the shoaler region the bottom ski slopes gradually to 50 or 60 fathoms, beyond which it drops suddenly to 80 or 90 fathoms over a muddy bottom.

Jeffreys Ledge bears S. ? W. from the lightship off Portland, 19 a long way to the upper edge and 22 miles S. from the buoy on the Hue and Cry to the side of the shoal.

Nantucket Shoals. This stretch out of bars and greater waters in between, roughly triangular in type with its apex at the north, lies down the western side of the Southern Channel, stretching out S. and SE. from the southern conclusion of Cape Nantucket and Cod Island. From Monomoy Denote Rogers Angling Terrain, on the eastern edge of Phelps Bank, it is SSE. 80 miles. Its width from Southeast Rips to the european edge of New South Shoal is 40 miles. The location includes several "sportfishing spots" and shoals, among which the following are the most important: Pollock Rip Crown, Floor and Rose Shoal, Fantastic Rip, Davis Bank, Fishing Rip, Old and New South Shoal, and Phelps Bank.

Jeffreys Ledge. Jeffreys Ledge might be considered among the best fishing grounds inside the Gulf of Maine, despite the fact that of fairly small dimension. It appears to be an extension in the shoal ground that makes off in an easterly direction from Cape Ann, it is about 20 kilometers long in a NE. and SW. path and about 4 miles large. Its the southern area of limits is 42? 54' and its upper limit 43? north latitude; its western and eastern limitations may be placed at 69? 58' and 70? 18' western side longitude. The base is rocky on the shoaler parts, with gravel and pebbles about the edges. Depths on the bank are from 27 to 35 fathoms, falling to 40 or 50 on the sides. The shoalest water is from 4 to 5 miles N. by E. from the buoy, where there is 22 fathoms. Ordinarily there is little or no tide, by having an occasional current SW. You can find, however, powerful westerly currents with the large easterly winds, and often following a period of mild weather without strong tides there will abruptly develop a weighty SW. flow, indicating the approach of your strong northwester. This looks a general guideline in the Gulf of Maine and is, perhaps, prevalent above much of our North Atlantic coast.

This ridge lies in a SE. and NW. direction, extending considerably indefinitely but for at least 10 miles by about 3 miles in width. On the ridge the base is cracked--a hard bottom of black color gravel, which generally means an effective fishing spot--the depths right here being from 85 to 90 fathoms. There are numerous muddy spots between these more difficult pieces of soil where soundings run to 100 fathoms or slightly more. The surrounding bottom is mostly of mud, and the depths average from 100 to 125 fathoms. There are a number of pieces of gravelly hard terrain in the location, each of which probably would furnish evenly good sport fishing for cod and cusk on the same periods as around the ridge.

Maurice Lubee's Floor. This is outside of New Ledge (Platts Bank) 47 miles SSE. from the lightship at Portland. Extending inside an ENE. and WSW. path, its limitations are relatively indefinite. It is actually perhaps 8 miles extended by 3 miles broad and has depths from 95 to 110 fathoms across a bottom consisting mostly of mud.

This is certainly essentially a cod soil for the entire calendar year, the kinds being most abundant from May 1 to October. It is a cusk ground every one of the year in the hard base of the further parts, March and April showing the largest schools. Hake also are abundant in 70 fathoms and deeper around the mud in summer and fall.

Jerry Yorks Ridge. This lies just inside and paralleling Jeffreys Ledge WNW. from its shoal water contributing to 5 mls distant from your ledge contributing to 18 kilometers SE. by S. ? S. from Cape Porpoise. This ground has from 45 to 48 fathoms of water on a difficult broken base. It is about 5 a long way long, NNE. and SSW., and averages 1? mls wide. This is an excellent haddock and cod ground In the fall or higher to Jan, these minn kota maxxum returning here early in the year months.

On and about each one of these shoals the sail fleet makes excellent catches, generally consisting of cod but with a reasonable proportion of pollock, also, and in the deeper water close to them, in summer and spring, a considerable amount of haddock. An occasional big halibut is taken, and also good grabs have been noted. There were documented in the everyday report of the Boston Fish Bureau between Might 15 and August1920 and 15, 10 trips created by the smaller vessels of the halibut fleet that landed fares of from 2,000 to ten thousand pounds on this species with this area. Perhaps more will be taken if the halibut fishery were to be followed in this article as in other areas. "Rip minn kota maxxum," as executed here, is done "with a drift," moving on the shoals and, as they relocate off from their website, sailing to repeat the process. The minn kota maxxum are used by hand-lining with "cockle" lure or by "jigging" the minn kota maxxum with a sparkly piece of metal representing a herring or similar seafood, beneath which are set twin hooks, the minn kota maxxum becoming struck when it is felt looking into the appeal. This fishery generally is carried on throughout May, July and June and August. In the herring and mackerel months these grounds usually give good minn kota maxxum for these species, the fish usually hitting here from May 15 to July 15.

Tillies Bank. [13] This bears E & S from Eastern Position Light just dropping Thacher Island Light-weight, then 3 miles a greater distance for best sport fishing: and E. by S. ? S. from Thacher Island, Cape Ann, from which the shoal on the center of the ground is distant 18 miles. This really is a small difficult spot with depths of from 25 to 28 fathoms, outside which the water deepens to 40 fathoms over a substantial area. The length of the entire soil is about 10 miles inside an E. and W. direction and the breadth about 5 miles. With the edge it falls away rapidly to depths of 50 to 60 fathoms before hitting the soil at nevertheless greater depths but a location of shoal water hooks up this terrain with Western side Jeffreys. The bottom is difficult and tough over the greater part of the bank. Tillies was earlier regarded among the best fishing reasons off Cape Ann which is still resorted to for cod and haddock in the fall and spring; for hake in thesummer season and spring season, and drop, and for pollock in the fall and spring. The minn kota maxxum is mainly by trawling, with all the gillnetters operating on the shoal grounds in under 50 fathoms.

Tobins. A name provided to a piece of terrain about 20 miles sq . lying S. by E. from the Highland Light. It runs from about 40 miles to about 60 kilometers offshore, the depths steadily increasing because the bottom slopes away uniformly from the shore from 75 to 95 fathoms across a bottom of clay, sand, and pebbles. Cod are taken within thesummer and spring, and fall, and haddock inMarch and February, and April. Compared with the reasons off Chatham, this is not that need considering a hake ground, though a few hake are considered here in summer season.

[Footnote 13: There has been some conjecture as to the beginning of the fairly unusual name of this banking institution. The writer would note that there was clearly an Edward Tillie inside the Company of Captain John Smith when he explored this region in 1614 and a Tilly (possibly the same particular person) who operated a minn kota maxxum station at Cape Ann through the years 1625 and 1624.]

3-Dory Ridge. Away from New Ledge and about midway between it and Harvey Blacks Ridge is a little ridge about 3 miles long, operating NE. and SW., contributing to ? mile vast. This is SE. by S. from the Portland Lightship. 38 miles to the shoal of 55 fathoms, which can be near its center. With this the ground ski slopes away on all sides to 65 and 63 fathom depths over which area the base is made up of pea gravel, mud and sand and rocks. At these reduced depths are normally found "plumbing" (clay-based cylinders), in which the minn kota maxxum ends unexpectedly. All about the ridge are depths of 80 to 100 fathoms with a bottom of mud. This is almost completely a cod ground, great from May possibly to August.

Eastern Shoal Water of Cape Ann. This is generally considered an integral part of Jeffreys and it is often spoken of as West Jeffreys by the fishermen. It expands In an ENE. direction from Cape Ann for a extended distance of from 15 to 18 mls. It is, in reality, a south west continuation of Jeffreys Ledge, the two forming a almost continuous ridge running NE. from Cape Ann a distance of about 42 kilometers. Depths on the so-called Eastern Shoal Normal water vary from 20 to 45 fathoms, the bottom being of rocks, pebbles, and coarse gravel above most of its extent. Fine sand and soil arise on the sides. The eastern part of the soil is resorted to from the haddock fleet during the slip and earlier winter, and other parts are visited pretty much during the whole year forhaddock and cod, and pollock by boats and vessels from Cape Ann and by art of various varieties from Boston and Portland-line trawlers, gill-netters, and a few of the new type of tiny otter trawlers, this second option fleet of create constantly growing in number.
