Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 10
It seems to not be frequented much in the winter months, though apparently there is no reasons why this should not be an all-the-year minn kota pieces ground. It furnishes, even so, a very good summer time handline fishery for cod at dogfish time, and in the spring months it abounds in cod, cusk, and hake, all fish of large size.

Roseway Bank. This bank is situated N. in the western part of La Have and SE. of Shelbourne Light, Nova Scotia: 31 miles SSE. from the whistling buoy off of Lockport, Nova Scotia, towards the southeastern advantage. It is oblong in shape and of small magnitude--about 270 square geographic miles. Its greatest duration is 21 miles along with its greatest breadth 15 kilometers. It stretches from 43? 12' to 43? 33' north latitude, and from 64? 25' to 64? 52' west longitude and also at the northwest corner is connected with the shore restrict of 60 fathoms by a narrow throat. Depths come from 33 to 48 fathoms. The bottom is ofgravel and sand, and rocks; about the Northeast Maximum the bottom is of yellow-colored gravel and dirt.

Currents in this area are not virtually so strong as about Cape Browns and Sable Lender, their general direction simply being WSW. and ENE the westerly a lot the stronger, though the power and direction of they are both much influenced by the wind.

The main fish taken here arehaddock and cod, and cusk, but hake, halibut and pollock occur, the most effective fishing months getting from Could to October, when the lender is resorted to by craft from western Nova Scotia. A number of New Britain craft also minn kota components here.

Los angeles Have Banking institution. Situated eastward of Browns S and Financial institution. and E. of Roseway Bank. It extends from 42? 34' to 43? 26' to the north latitude a distance of 52 kilometers, and from 63? 50' to 65? 07' western side longitude a distance of about 54 miles. The bank is nearly divided into two portions, in which the eastern (La Have Bank correct) extends N and S. 39 miles and the traditional western portion nearly E. and W. about 35 miles. The total area of the bank is around 1,200 miles.

The bottom is largely coarsepebbles and pea gravel, and rock and roll, with smaller sized areas of fine sand distributed here and there. Depths run from 40 to 50 fathoms. This can be much affected by the push and route of the wind flow and is normally quite powerful during easterly blows, although the general set of the currents is to the westward.

The principal minn kota parts upon this bank in the past has been for cod and haddock: and while past reports, (1881) speak of this as having once been a favorite fishing soil for halibut and suggest that it was not at time of much importance because fishery, the figures with this ground for that year 1923 show the halibut find to have been third in volume and first in value of the species used there. The truth is, the get of halibut here can make quite an imposing body when the comparatively small size of the ground is recognized as.

Little La Have and also the La Have Ridges are just continuations of the back to the American Bank for a distance around 45 mls. This spots the eastern limit in about 62? 50' west longitude, the upper and the southern area of boundaries becoming about as those of La Have Banking institution. The portion of the ridges is approximately 1,575 miles. The base here is a succession of ridges of gravel and pebbles with occasional sections of rocks. Depths are from 53 to 80 fathoms. The current, from time to time strong, is weaker on this page than even farther W. around the bank and, except during easterly wind, is but little noticed. The general set is westerly.

"The Ridges" says the report prior to mentioned, "were for many years one of many favorite resorts for halibut catchers during winter, and many excellent catches of cod were taken at that time of year. At present but few halibut are caught except from the deep water along the the southern area of edge of the soil, where they sometimes have been discovered quite plentiful during almost the entire 12 months." Obviously there is not much improvement in these circumstances since the writer's time; minn kota parts seem to be present here In about the same volumes as in previous years.

The Gully is a very significant halibut floor. The halibut are not seen in great amounts all over the floor, perhaps the very best of the minn kota parts becoming on the rocky and gravelly ridges and slopes included involving the meridians of 69? and 80? western longitude. This rocky bottom part is full of food, and the lant and herring tend to be plentiful in their season. In the spring the halibut are especially many in the north and northwestern elements of the bank, in the future, in June and July, moving further out. Some, are found in winter. As the cod is sometimes found in The Gully in 60 to 90 fathoms, it does not seem to be of typical occurrence; and apparently there are actually almost no haddock here, possibly because of the range of the drinking water and the mother nature of the bottom part.

Artimon Bank. Has a area of some 120 square miles by using a bottom of gravel and rocksdepths and rocks of 38 to 50 fathoms. It really is but little known because of the tendency of the anglers to use the larger grounds shut at hand. Cod are known to be present right here, however. Your budget lies N. of the eastern part of Quereau, separated as a result by a thin, deep-water channel.

Misaine Bank. In general financial institutions are segregated by some 20 a long way of serious water, though lies N. of the western two-thirds of Quereau, at one location very near. Its very best length is 80 mls and its best width 40 miles. Depths are from 40 to 60 fathoms more than a bottom cracked and difficult. A few halibut trips are landed from it in most years, even though it is not of much significance as a minn kota parts ground.

Canso Lender. A long, filter extension of Misaine Lender, lying within an E, and W. course; its duration is 45 miles along with its greatest thickness 13 a long way, its region being about 425 sq miles. Depths range from 30 to 65 fathoms more than a bottom of sand, with spots of gravel and pebbles. It is not of much relevance as a minn kota parts floor, especially as judged using it from the American fleet, though much more fished by vessels from Nova Scotia; perhaps it is actually overshadowed by the presence of its larger neighborhood friends, Western and Quereau Banks, with which grounds it kinds virtually one piece of base, only filter, deep-water routes separating them. These larger reasons are intensely fished the two by Us vessels and also those from Nova Scotia ports and also by French and English otter trawlers.

The data given elsewhere and here with this report are taken from the published bulletins of the United States Bureau of Fisheries, and include only the landings of vessels of 5 lots net, or older, at the plug-ins of Boston and Glouscester, Mass., and Portland, Me.

[Footnote 16: "Pedro Reinel, a Portuguese pilot of great importance and fame" (Herrera) made a map in 1505 displaying Sable Tropical isle, feared and dreaded by all fishermen even in those days, exactly where he called it "Santa Cruz." Jacamo Gastaldi, an Italian cartographer, in 1548 shows it "Isolla de Arena." Sir Humphrey Gilbert or his historian, says that the Portuguese had produced an interesting settlement here for shipwrecked mariners. This, "On intelligence we had of your Portugal who had been himself existing when the Portugals, above 30 years previous (thus prior to 1551) performed put upon the island nice and swine to breed, which were because exceedingly increased."]
