Gem Elements
Gems are separated into two types of elements: "Pure" Elements and "Mixed" elements. Mixed elements are made up of two or more pure elements, and may have access to the powers of some or all of their sub-elements. Mixed elements are never as strong as pure elements when it comes to the pure element in question, but they allow a gem-user to be a bit more versatile at any moment.

In general, gems are about the same color as their names are in here (unless otherwise stated). There may be some variation, but it's generally safe to say that, for example, all fire gems are red. Gems are at their most vibrant colors when at full power, and generally become progressively dimmer and more transparent as they lose power.

Elemental: The most mixed of mixed elements, the Elemental element (oh gosh that sounds silly) splits off into the fire pure element and storm mixed element. It's common that an Elemental gem does not have access to all of its sub-elements, simply because there are so many of them.

Fire: Basically self-explanatory. It's like the FI royal magic condensed into a pretty red stone. Except it focuses more on actual flames than just heat. Details.

Storm: Exactly what it hopefully sounds like, the Storm mixed element contains elements that you might see represented in storms. Often times, those with storm gems are able to summon up small, localized storms (these generally require multiple storm gems and possibly help from a focus gem).

Water: Like fire, this pure element should be self-explanatory. Much like the AM royal magic, this involves manipulating things in their liquid form (most commonly water).

Ice: This pure element generally focuses on water in its solid form. It allows a person to instantly freeze the water vapor in the air, or water from some other source. It might be possible to freeze other things, but water is most certainly the easiest to do.

Wind: Much like AD royal magic, wind gems allow for users to control the winds, possibly creating tornadoes and the like. Basically self-explanatory.

Lightning: Or electricity, but we'll stick with lightning for the sake of the setting. Indeed, these are your electric shock type spells.

Natural: This mixed elements contains the Life and Earth sub-elements. This gem offers a person control over the general element that may be sometimes called "Nature," but natural gems have a habit of leaning more towards one side or the other; it's very rare to find one that has equal power in both Life and Earth.

Life: Originally called organic, but changed to Life to fit in a bit better. This mixed element contains the Animal and Plant sub-elements. The Life element is a fantastic healing element, as it understands the properties of the body, but can draw from other forms of life, as well.

Plant: This pure element focuses on plants. It can be used to speed up the growth of plants, or perhaps to understand their properties just from looking at them. Combat skills may involve summoning vines to ensnare opponents.

Animal: This pure element focuses on animals. Primarily, it is used for communicating with animals, and perhaps repairing bodies (but the life element is actually better at healing than animal). Shape-shifting may be possible, but would require particularly powerful gems, combined with someone skilled at using them.

Earth: This mixed element contains the Rock and Metal sub-elements. The Earth element is very much like VT royal magic, in that it allows users control over these things that are found naturally along the ground's surface.

Rock: This pure element focuses on rocks, soil, and possibly sand. It allows a person to reshape the material and such.

Metal: This pure element focuses on metals. It allows a person to reshape the material, or possibly make it tougher or more brittle.

Mind: A mixed element containing elements that may or may not be considered mental powers. These elements include Balance, Force, and Mental. Though the "Mental" sub-element is considered a part of the Mind element, it's very unusual for it to be represented by the gem in any capacity that's actually usable.

Balance: This mixed element contains the light and dark sub-element. Balance is the most effective gem element for creating illusions, as it allows the user to manipulate light and shadows at the same time. It still has properties of both of its sub-elements' specific skills.

Light: This pure element is often considered the best healing element. Light magic might, in some places, be looked at as "Holy" magic. It allows for healing, basic illusions, summoning up of light sources, and possibly even minor blessing-type abilities (good luck charms, etc). Light does not necessarily mean "good," but it's often looked at as such.

Darkness: Often seen as light's polar opposite, Dark magic is seen as a magic of harm. One can create basic illusions, clouds of darkness that are difficult to see through, and other such things. It can make even minor wounds sting. It's possible to cast minor curses (bad luck, etc) on people. Dark does not necessarily mean "evil," but it's often looked at as such.

Force: This pure element may be associated with powers of telekinesis--by exerting different forces on objects, it's possible to move them however one wishes to move them.

Mental: This pure element stands out among other gems. For one thing, its colors are unusual--at full power, it is completely clear and colorless, and stays as such until the moment it is completely drained, at which time it becomes opaque white. This gem is used to establish mental links between people--it can be used for communicative purposes. It's nearly impossible, but theoretically possible to probe information out of the corners of a person's mind, or even take complete control over a person.

Focus: The focus element is also somewhat unusual compared to other gems. It does not have magic of its own; instead, it amplifies the magic of other gems. It is used primarily to allow more magic, or more powerful magic, to be cast. However, just like other gems, it has a limit to how much its power can be used until it must be left to recharge.
