Salathielly's Commonplace Log
Okay, so
When I drove up to fly out where I used to live, I stopped at the art museum there to see the exhibit on Japanese and Korean art. It was pretty neat, and I was able to pick up a couple of books on Japanese and Korean folktales in the gift shop. Then I chilled in Half-Price Books while waiting for my sister to get back to the apartment and let me in, and of course I spent too much money while doing so. They had a bunch of mythology books that looked interesting, and I also was finally able to find the entirety of Stephen King's Dark Tower series in one place (one was even on the dollar clearance rack), so I figured that this was some sort of sign - that and the people who have come into the library recently talking about how much they enjoy it. I've never read any King, but I figure if I don't like it, my library could stand to own all of the books if I decide to donate them. Then again, I might really enjoy them and decide to keep them. But anyway.

My sister finally got off work, and as she stresses as much as my mother, we had an interesting evening. I was already packed, so I just worked on rereading American Gods and stayed out of her way. The next morning we had to get up early to fly to Denver. Thankfully I didn't have to go through the full-body scan. It was neat to see the Lake as we flew over it, and it's always interesting to see when the fields below us change from rectangles to wavy lines to circles. After landing in Denver, we met up with Mom and Dad, had lunch at a Village Inn (a place that used to be in our state back when my parents were dating), and drove to our hotel. I wasn't as tired as I should have been, so instead of taking a nap, I walked down to a secondhand bookstore with my dad (and picked up a few more mythology books, of course). Then we had a family dinner of sorts with at the rehearsal dinner the bride and groom put on for us - I guess his family sells tiles, so it was held in a tile showroom, which is neater than it sounds - and it was catered by taco/crepe-making people who made delicious food. It was nice to see most of the cousins and meet some of my grandfather's siblings, although I can never remember their names and faces.

As the wedding was in the afternoon the next day, we decided to go to the art museum first (after stopping at a place called Dozens for breakfast, which was quite tasty). The DAM was amazing. Four floors on one side, seven on the other, jam-packed with awesome art and artifacts. I shouldn't have spent so much time on the one side, as I had to rush through the entire floor they had devoted to pre-Columbian artifacts as well as the Asian floor. My sister and her boyfriend, both major art lovers, claimed it was the best museum they'd ever been in. I'd agree (barring the British Museum).

Thankfully the weather was nice for the wedding, and it was, for the most part, a very nice ceremony (with the exception of the little ring-bearer not wanting to go down the aisle and the minister calling my [female] cousin the "husband" - pretty funny as far as mistakes go). Then there was a reception afterwards, and my kilt-wearing cousin (kid you not - he also goes to conventions as a Star Wars stormtrooper) made me dance. I also got dragged along to a bar/club with the cousins afterward, a very crowded place that played music so loudly that the whole place was vibrating. It was an experience, and it was nice to spend time with cousins I never see.

The next morning we had a wedding party brunch, and then we flew out and back, and I drove back down to my apartment. Exciting weekend.

Just work as usual this week - I Cuttered some teen books yesterday (for our new "Teen" section) and finally got my historical tour of the library, which is cool and deserves its own entry.
