“But I Wonder”
They tell me I’m a man, but I wonder
Their expectations I can’t yet fulfill
I lack the voice of an old commander
I prefer to keep quiet and tranquil.
I lack a gun and own no bat or ball
And I do not think a dog’s a friend
Yet the country is where I hang my hat
And quietly, I’m sure, I’ll meet my end.
My frame won’t fit in their minds, and still
Their standards are so high, I find it hard,
I wonder why I try to fit the bill,
And if I don’t, my reputation; marred.
They tell me I’m a man, but I wonder:
I can survive the social stress I’m under?
