It was another boring Christmas, and Cindy was stuck babysitting. She was already eighteen, yet her parents still forced her to watch her little sister. She sat and half watched the TV. There was nothing but infomercials on now. Some guy was blabbing about some miracle product to some ditsy bimbo. She turned and looked at the clock. Three in the morning… ugh! I could've gone to Missy's Christmas bash!!!
Her parents acted young for their age, and loved to go to parties. She was used to them going out on Christmas to a friend's party, but usually they had a babysitter already picked out. Just her luck! The old hag had to go and break her hip; forcing her to do her dirty work. And Michael was gonna be there…
She was in no mood to put up with her bratty sister, and luckily for her the little nuisance had already fallen asleep before her parents left. To think of it, her sister hadn't made a peep the whole time. Sure she was asleep, but she usually got up to go to the restroom or get some water. Her sister was the complete opposite of her. She was pretty and popular while her sister was nerdy and dorky. She still actually believed in Santa! Yeah, like an old man actually went around handing out presents. No one is that generous. She laughed to herself a bit.
Suddenly the screen went blank. The words "Newsbreak" appeared in big, bold letters on the TV. It switched to a woman, wearing too much make-up, sitting behind a desk. Cindy laughed a bit then got up and headed to the kitchen.
We apologize for the interruption, and we'll continue our regular programming in just a moment. There have been new developments in the break out from the Shady Hills Psychiatric Institution earlier. The patient has been identified as Edward Manning who is one of the more dangerous patients at Shady Hills. At approximately three thirty pm this afternoon, Manning stabbed two orderlies while they attempted to give him his daily medication. From this he proceeded to make his escape. At about six this evening, police found the body of thirty year old Tyler Penn who had been stripped of his Santa outfit. Authorities believe Manning was responsible for this murder and is hiding some where in the Victoria County area. They have advised that all citizens lock their homes and stay indoors until Manning is caught…
Cindy came back with a coke and a sandwich. She sat down and grabbed the remote; changing the station. Suddenly a crash was heard from outside. "Jinxy! That stupid cat probably got into the trash again." She got up and looked out the window. Snow fell like rain and she couldn't see a thing but trees. Damn cat… she's probably rummaging for some foo… She slowly stopped, a thought popped into her head. Wait… it's way too cold for her to be out there, and mom would have brought her in… Her heart nearly stopped when she looked at the cat's bed and saw her laying in it fast asleep. Don't panic, it was probably just a stray animal... She shivered a bit and began to pull the curtain over the window.
The phone rang, causing Cindy to scream and jump a little. After realizing how silly she was being she walked over and answered it. "Hello?" She managed to say. A man answered on the other line, "Yes hello, this is sheriff Lombard of the Victoria County Police Department..." Oh no, mom and dad!, she thought. "Umm, yes, hi sheriff..." The sheriff cleared his throat a bit before proceeding. "Yes hi ma'am, I'm calling all the residents in this area to let them know that there's an escapee from the insane asylum on the loose, and he's considered to be armed and dangerous. We'll be patrolling the area all night till we find him. Now what we're advising is that all residents lock all their doors and windows and call us if you see or hear anything."
Cindy gulped a bit. "Well sheriff... I thought I heard a crash outside... it may be nothing, but my mom and dad aren't home, and it's just me and my little sister. I guess I'm a little worried..." The sheriff's voice softened a bit. "Now there's no need to be worried young lady. ...Look, we'll send a couple of officers over and have a look around. If you're still feeling uneasy you and your sister can wait for your parents down at the station. How's that sound?" She sighed with relief; smiling. "Yes, thanks sheriff, that sounds like a good idea." The sheriff continued. "Alright well it'll take about thirty minutes in the storm to get to your location, just sit tight." With that he hung up.
Cindy put down the receiver and laughed at how incredibly childish she was being. She didn't need to go and wait for "mommy and daddy" at the station. When the police came to look around she'd politely decline the sheriff's offer and that'll be that. She heard Jinxy's bell collar jingle around. Feeling a little scared she thought she'd pick her up and hold her while she watched TV. She turned around and stopped cold as she saw Jinxy laying in the same position she had been earlier.
Maybe she shook her head a bit like she does when she’s trying to fling a bug off her face. Yeah, that must be it… Cindy laughed nervously at how silly she was being. There was a knock at the door. Already? It hadn’t even been ten minutes and they were already here? As she walked over to the front door she thought it might be her parents but then why would they be knocking?
She reached for the lock as she looked through the peephole and as she looked her blood ran cold. There’s no one there… She stopped and slowly backed away from the door. She may have been imagining things earlier but she had definitely heard a loud knocking on the front door! Tears started swelling up in her eyes. Now she was really scared!
A loud thump upstairs made her jump. “Anne..?” She called meekly. She slowly made her way to the stairs. “Anne…?!” She called with a little more authority. “Anne this isn’t funny, answer me!” She cried out, tears beginning to stream down her face. She cautiously walked up the stairs and turned towards her sister’s room.
“Anne please… please answer me…” She cried. As she approached her door she slowly pushed it open. Anne’s window was open; the cold air rushed in, bringing snow and dead leaves with it. “Anne…?” she managed to squeak as she walked towards her bed. Suddenly she looses her footing on some melted snow on the floor and falls on her sister’s red sheets.
Wait… Anne’s sheets are blue… she thinks as she lifts her head. Apparently some snow collected on her sheets and melted, soaking Cindy’s clothes; some of the water getting in her mouth. A metal-y taste filled her mouth as she looks over to her sister. Her eyes widen as she realizes it wasn’t snow.
Her sister lay in her bed, a huge gash in her chest. Cindy jumps up, covered in her sister’s blood, and screams at the top of her lungs. A low, maniacal laughter is her from behind her. She quickly turns to see a man dressed like Santa standing in the doorway. He was covered in dirt and blood, and he wielded an axe in one arm and a black garbage bag in the other.
“Hello, little girl…” the man says in a low and deep voice. “Have you been a good this year?” He says, laughing insanely. Cindy begins to cry uncontrollably. “Please… don’t hurt me…” The man twists his face in confusion. “But… don’t you want to be with your sister for Christmas!” He screams as he lifts his axe and swings it at Cindy who ducks and runs around him. The man spins around and grabs her by her hair.
“Aww… but you haven’t gotten your present!” He howls as he wraps his arm around her neck. Slowly he reaches around with his other hand and pulls the sharp end of the axe across her neck with great force; causing a sickening gurgling sound. Cindy’s lifeless and blood filled body falls to the ground; her eyes widened in horror.
The man smiles and laughs, “Merry Christmas to all… and to all a good night…” He howls again with laughter as he makes his way out of the house. For you see, Santa can’t stay for very long. How else can he punish all those naughty children in one night?
