Salathielly's Commonplace Log
Bleach <3
I was going to read more mythology when I came home, but reading some of the manga during my lunch break today put me in the mood for Bleach, so I think I'm going to watch anime instead.

I've been trying to figure out who my favorite characters are and why I like them. Of Ichigo's original group, I like Ishida the best. Part of it is likely due to the fact that he wears glasses and is smart (oh, and that archery is cool). But his flaws (mainly his pride and his perchance for illogical testosterone-induced rivalry) make him interesting, as do his endearing quirks (such as his perchance for sewing and the random space-out moments that he has - I'm thinking of the butterfly scene when they're in jail in Seireitei right now, and it's making me chuckle).

I'm also a fan of Urahara Kisuke. He's one of those acts-stupid-but-proves-astonishingly-knowledgeable-and-might-actually-be-behind-the-whole-plot types. He manages to be both awesome and humorous, a manipulative b*****d and a pitiable guy. Very complex and intriguing, in short. Also from his shop, I have a fondness for the amazingly powerful little girl, Ururu. She's just plain awesome (when Jinta isn't picking on her, anyway).

And then we get to Soul Society with its hordes of interesting captains and lieutenants. My favorite by far (perhaps my favorite character in the series, although I'm not sure) would be Ukitake. I'm not sure if it's his long white hair, his neat eyebrows, the fact that I pity him for his tuberculosis, the fact that he's pretty darn powerful in spite of said tuberculosis, or the fact that he's just such a nice guy, but I really like him. His friend Kyouraku (very lazy and flowery and a sake-loving flirt, but somehow endearing) is also up there on my list. I didn't really like Zaraki at first, but his badassness just grows on you after a while. Ditto with his adorable little lieutenant (something about powerful little girls, I guess). Byakuya also grew on me, though I had to learn that he had a heart first. Kira also grew on me...poor depressed guy.

Of the villains, the only one that vaguely interests me is Gin...probably because his motivations don't seem very clear to me. I wasn't drawn to any arrancar the first time around, but I'll have to see if this changes when I rewatch the series and read more of the manga.

Honestly, though, I can't think of any characters that I outright hate because they're badly done. The author's definitely good at creating characters, and I especially love how he weaves in a complex net of friendships and relationships and ties.
