Musings of a Christian Mystic in training
Like the titles says, opinions and speculations is Christian and Gnostic Christian mysticism
the lukewarm and conflict of interest
Revelations 3
14"To the angel of the church in Laodicea write:
These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God's creation. 15I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17You say, 'I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.' But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. 18I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see. 19Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent. 20Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me. 21To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."
This is a common passage used to attack liberal Christians by many mainstream conservative Christians. I think though that there is a different view concerning the interpretation of this passage not being accounted for. I believe the angel being addressed here is actually one of the Archons. As to which one, I haven't deduced yet, but I'm sure it's one of the Big Seven addressed in the The Apocryphon of John.
The theme here is those who are lukewarm. The common interpretation of lukewarm is half-hearted Christians but I'm thinking that it has more to do with self-deceit. We see a duality of hot or cold. This duality reflects a serving of Yaldaboth and a serving of God. If one is lukewarm then one is trying to serve both while believing they are serving only God, which goes back to the older verse "can't serve two masters". The author doesn't condemn either duality but explicitly condemns the mixing. If one is hot or cold they are still being honest about who they are serving and in truth seeking honesty with oneself is central and key to "hearing who is standing at the door and knocking". The lukewarm are those who erroneously believe that they are serving God but rather are serving themselves and trying to justify or explain away the serving of one's self as being (falsely) God's will. Of course those that think they are rich would believe they are serving God, but the author of this passage calls them on it. Since they are lying to themselves about who they are they have nothing and will not be able to hear the knocking.

Now the items being asked for here I'm unsure what they are but I believe that they are tools or concepts that must be understood so one can be honest with themselves and actually serve God. Gold refined in fire, white robes, and salves for one's eyes. If I had to take a guess, it would be refining one's soul so it can get rid of it's impurities and falsehoods, protection from spiritual perversion, and the ability to see when this is self-deception is going on in one's self and possibly others.
