Salathielly's Commonplace Log
Chicago
I took the RTA public transit bus thing downtown and caught the Megabus to Chicago. Long time on a bus, but it wasn't too bad. Got there around 11, and my friend picked me up. We took the bus back to her apartment, and I met one of her roommates.

On Wednesday, we had breakfast at a brunch place near her house, which was tasty. Then we took the train downtown and went to Navy Pier. The weather was really lovely - quite warm and sunny. We ate roasted cinnamon almonds there. Then we went to the Hersheys and Ghiardelli stores (got ice cream at the Ghiardelli store...I wanted to get chocolate to take home to my family, but it was so warm that it would have melted). We looked in a few other shops as well in random places before taking another train to Wicker Park, where we went to a cool used bookstore, where I got a few more mythology books (I finally found a couple of African ones, yay). We sat in the park and watched the dogs and people. Then we had dinner at a Greek restaurant, which was rather delicious. We went back to her apartment and watched a Wallace and Grommit film (the baker murder mystery one). She also showed me some games on her computer before I once again slept on the foldout couch.

On Thursday we had breakfast at Panera and looked around World Market, where I got a few things (including a lunch box for my new job). Then we went over to her university. I sat and read some Discworld while she was in her French class. Then we ate Subway and sat in her department's office and talked to some of her fellow linguists before I sat in on her semantics class. It was...interesting. I didn't understand all of the formulas and everything, but I got the basic gist of it. They spent most of the class going from "Dallas is a city in Texas" to "Dallas is a city and Dallas is in Texas". It's hard to explain, but kind of interesting. A few of them went out for beers afterward...for a while it was just me and my friend and Sergio (?), and then Laura joined us. I didn't drink (except for water), but we were there quite a long time and had some interesting conversations. I'm glad my friend has found some fun people to socialize with. Unfortunately we were out really late, and my bus left early this morning...it wasn't too bad. I made it on time. Sadly the bus was pretty full this time, so I was kind of squished in, which is not fun when you are tall. It's still rather hot for April, so that didn't help. But I made it back okay.

Tomorrow I'm traveling again...home for Easter, rah.
