"The Insane are the best philosophers, after all."

I sighed, and looked up at the sun. Last day of school, for this year, and all we had to do was hand in this report about our ancestry, and we’d be having our usual poetry and creative writing session. Mrs. Buns always liked to end the year off with a bang, though still reflecting into school work. I felt inside my bag, my piece was ready, the piece I had spent nearly the whole winter and spring months to write.
I ran down the steps, placing my summer hat on my head. I could see the popular kids walking to school, which was right around the corner. I exhaled, and began to walk. I was always one for being early, never a day went by where I was late. And I never got sick. I was immune to most colds that my class would throw at me.
So I walked down the street, reaching the cold stone school. St. Paterson elementary. My last and final year at this dump would be the next year. I would be finally graduated, I shrieked inside. I dreamed of moving away from that school, and leaving for the school my mother had suggested so long ago. In Olympia.
I smiled, and ran into the halls. I looked around, where was everybody? Only the popular girls were in the halls. Even in this time of the morning people were walking around, reaching their lockers or chatting. This morning there were zip. Odd.
I climbed up the steps, reaching my locker. I did the combination, and pulled out my science, French and English textbooks, before rushing into my homeroom class, where I hoped to find some other classmates. Only one sat, Euri, a Greek Girl who I had met a few years back. Her father had left her at a young age, and her mother had died of cancer. Euri had black all over her, from her eyelashes and hair to her sneakers. She had black lipstick and nails. Her skin created the contrast, a pale white. Her eyes showed lack of sleep. Though her demon appearance, Euri was quite protective, and persuasive. Though she was usually called the riser of the dead.
I sunk into my chair beside her, and gave her a look of shock. She seemed to understand, and nodded at me.
“They’ve found us, Jesse. Unfortunately our scent is to large,” She explained. I understood every word.
“I thought they would not come for at least another year, so we could go to Olympia,” I said.
“Ya, well your father was wrong. And we probably have the worst people to fight off for our first time,” Euri said. Was she making me spooked out on purpose?
“What monster?” I asked her. She smiled, and pointed to an open book on her desk. It read, Empousai in big letters.
“Vampires,” she told me, and revealed her teeth, big and large. No fangs, I breathed relief.
“Great, so we have empousai. I got some extra healing drink in my locker. And my clip is in my hair.” I pointed to the flower clip. “Did they make everyone go away?”
“I think there is four of them. Three are probably guarding the door they locked the mortals in. One is headed our way, now. And don’t trust anyone.”
Don’t trust anyone, a commonly used slogan of Euri’s. Her father was Phobos, god of fear after all. And with her deep and dark attitude, she only found herself a good person to speak to.
