The Description of my Journal
My Entry in a "My Unlikely Michigan Hero" Essay Contest
An Exceptionally Average Hero

The universe is home to a vast array of heavenly bodies. Of these uncountable bodies exists innumerable planets, and on at least one of these planets exists, life. On this planet, from the multitude of life, exist innumerable lawns, each with innumerable blades of grass. And on one of these lawns, mine, exists a blade of grass. If counting as one reads a book, from left to right, you will arrive at the four hundred eighty fifth thousand, two hundred eighty third blade.

This blade of grass is my Michigan Hero.™

Many would say that I’m an unusual young lad for believing such a thing, but I have strong justification for this belief. The truly strange people believe the best heroes are men and women who save lives or risk their own for others. While it is true that those individuals are heroes, I firmly believe they are no equals for the four hundred eighty fifth thousand, two hundred eighty third blade of grass on my lawn.

You see, the four hundred eighty fifth thousand, two hundred eighty third blade of grass on my lawn is not special, even by grass standards. It grows, it photosynthesizes, and in time, it will wither away and perish, like any blade of grass. However, this blade of grass has achieved perfect nirvana- it never questions why it does what it does, it does not expect the other blades of grass to do its work for it, and it does not lust for world domination like my two hundred twenty third thousand, one hundred fifty second blade of grass does. This blade of grass has reached a Zen-like state that not only rivals, but also outshines that of Buddha’s.

This blade of grass (the four hundred eighty fifth thousand, two hundred eighty third blade of grass on my lawn) survives the elements while remaining completely altruistic. The blade subsists on nothing but water and sunlight, taking little from the environment, constantly beaten down by rain, wind, frost, and in spite of the lack of shelter, lives on. It perseveres and provides oxygen to sustain other life on the planet, asking little, providing much in return. The blade feeds on waste, survives the most harrowing elements, all the while synthesizing the oxygen that is necessary for others to thrive.

In our lifetimes, we may never recognize a hero that ever outperforms the four hundred eighty fifth thousand, two hundred eighty third blade of grass on my lawn. But maybe, if we pay attention to the little things in life, we just may find a dandelion or perhaps a kernel of corn that could live up to the high standards set by this one, heroic blade of grass. And that is why the four hundred eighty fifth thousand, two hundred eighty third blade of grass on my lawn is my Michigan Hero.™
