So...
I've decided I'm going to start adding more of my writings here, and posting them under my signature.
I'm thinking of doing a new piece every week or so, sometimes something new and sometimes fixed up versions of something I've already written.

I like words that start with some!

Burning

The world is burning. The colors are merging together, blending into one. Something flies, something falls. Bright wings hang in front of me, suspended on their own, fluttering against the wind. They’re all I can see, the only thing that sticks out. They flutter again, asking me to follow. I step forward carefully, the ground below me threatening to break with each small step. I take one step after the other, feeling the gentle give under my feet. The winged creature continues to fly, zig-zagging towards the flames. I know I should feel the danger, but something about this creature soothes me. It looks so weak, but so strong. It glows against the dark night, pulling me with it, irresistible. I walk for hours, until pure curiosity is all that keeps me going. The burning city grows ever closer, the heat warming my cold skin. The creature stops, more clear now against the flames. It is a butterfly, its wings bright blue with yellow spots. It’s beautiful, distracting me from all else. I stare into the wings as they transform. Slowly, they turn into eyes, bright blue with golden flecks. The creature grows, spreads, forming the shape of a young man. His hair is short, but shaggy, black against the light behind him. He’s only a few inches taller than I am, but thick and strong. The word “solid” comes to mind. One hand reaches forward, his eyes full of pleading. I want to take his hand, but somehow I can’t move. I am mesmerized by his eyes, frozen in space. His beautiful, sad, lonely eyes, are calling out to me. He gestures again, but I’m still stuck. He steps forward, stopping just a few inches away from me. I can hear his soft breath, his quiet heartbeat, both of them in time with my own. His eyes continue watching me, growing sadder. I want to tell him I can’t move, tell him I’m trying, but the words won’t escape. I want to say that I want him, need him, but my mouth is frozen shut. He’s so beautiful, but he seems so dangerous, like he could hurt me with a single touch. I try to form the words, to ask him if he’s really mine, but I just stammer. He leans forward, watching my eyes carefully as the tears escape, and whispers just one word in my ear.

“Forever.”
