I really need to get a new cat...
Ever since my 18-ish year-old cat died, we've been getting a lot of strays around the neighborhood. The other day when I was at home alone, I heard someone or thing moving around in the front. I peeked out, and saw a dark shape zoom down the hallway. It turns out a stray dilute torti had somehow snuck into our house. I eventually managed to lure her out with food (she was skinny and starving, poor thing!) She was very skittish and wary of loud noises, but she did enjoy getting petted and sitting on laps. We put up found cat posters, and took her to the SPCA to see if she was micro chipped. It turns out she was micro chipped, and at the human society where I volunteer! Her owner's phone number had been disconnected, and we weren't able to contact her owner. (I hope she wasn't abandoned!) The SPCA said they would keep her for 10 days, and if the owner didn't show up, we could adopt her (for $75). They were also really rude to my mom, and acted like she had stolen the cat.
The humane society finally contacted us, and said they already had the cat. Apparently she had been there before, probably when I was there, (she was called Sophie). However, they said she was anemic and terminally ill, and would have to be euthanized immediately. Of course we got upset, and offered to take her if there was a possibility of saving her. The Humane society said we could have her, but the medical procedures would cost $3000. They have been really vague about her actual condition however, so we still don't know exactly what's going on. They said we would have to decide immediately though. Both of my previous two old cats had kidney failure and bladder problems in their later years. Our last one was on fluids for a year. Sophie is already 12. We also have a stray in our front yard with a messed up eye. I don't know what it is about my house, but it seems to attract sick cats.
On a lighter note, I will be adopting two kittens soon. There are four to choose from, but it's so hard to decide since they all have unique personalities!

I'm sorry about your 18-ish year old cat dyeing! Those kittens are really cute!
