We're wolfs at sunset.
As a lone wolf howls in the distance, you'll begin to feel a tingle in your toes. It will spread and before you know it you'll be standing over all you were wearing. Free to hunt, guard and play in the woods from sunset to sunrise, when the sun paints the sky brilliant fiery colors.
Chapter 1
Alone, a girl sat in the middle of the woods with the soft breeze making her sterling silver hair billow about her face, highlighting it with an eerie innocence. As the sounds around her began to meld into what her mother would call a sunset lullaby, she had no clue that she was being watched. The crickets chirped, and a wolf called in the distance. The girl stood, knowing it would soon be time for her to roam the woods, free and light on her feet. As the golden sun sank lower behind the darkening red and purple of the sky she felt a slight tingle starting at her toes. Within seconds the dress was limp and ,no longer filled with a warm body, under the front paws of a small, somehow fraglie looking, snow white wolf. It's electric blue eyes shifted around the clearing, hungering for any sign of a companion. There was a soft rustle and a snapping sound as a large muscular, midnight black wolf stepped into the now, nearly gone sunlight. Eager to know this new one, the little one rushed up to him and sniffed at his nose, cautiously. Moments after the eager glitter faded from the females eyes, the male stepped forward to allow three more mucular males up behind him. Frightened but at the same time, intrigued, the female retreated a few steps. The next male, a young, rusty red color, trotted up to the cowering female. He gently nudged her nose with his, and ran his snout along hers. She was surprised when another one, growled in response. The larger, shady grey, male stepped forward and beared his fangs to the rusty red one. Before she could utter a whimper they both lunged at each other, and broke out into a nasty fight. The only one that had not been overcome by curiosity like the other two, finally loped up to the shaking female. He was a soft, caramel color, and his eyes were a laughing butter scottch. He lifted her snout gently with his nose, and nuzzeld it affectionatly, causing the other two to stop and stare in quiet fury. The electric blue irises shot from the caramel male to the shadey gray one, with a questioning look. After a few more minutes of staring at eachother they started off ,back into the woods. The graceful female followed in a way that seemed almost catlike instead of the nomal, clumsy lope of a dog. They hunted for hours before the snow white female decided to head back to her clearing. The males followed behind her. they stared in wonder as she maneuvered into the light purple dress she'd been wearing at sunset. After walking a circle twice she laid down and curled up.the shady gray one curled up right next to her, his body somehow curling around her own.as the sun peeked up above the trees they all fell asleep. The sun was high in the sky and beating down when the girl woke again. The shady gray wolf turned out to be a boy who looked about sixteen. his skin was tan, much like hers and the others, and he was not wearing a shirt. a gust of wind sent his short black hair tumbling about his face. the carmel colored wolf turned out the be a boy only about fifteen, a year older than she, had light brown hair that was in a way , similar to gray's style. She climbed silently to her feet, careful not to wake the sleeping strangers. Where the midnight black male had curled up, there was now young man who had an odd, purpleish- white hair color--which was spiked up in one area-- and looked to be around nineteen or twenty. The last, rusty red one, who looked about seventeen, was now a light bronze, with dark, blood red hair. They were all very good looking, especially the boy she'd just been curled up next to. As she slipped on her black flats, the boy with black hair sat up. He watched her walk to a small pond and wash her face. She was startled when his reflection showed up behind hers, just barely slouching, with his weight on one leg. His torn black jeans tightened around his thighs as he knelt beside her. He smiled at her, revealing a perfect white set of teeth. She could feel herself blushing and quickly turned back to the water, causing her sterling hair to fall as a curtain between them. She heard a laugh and turned her eyes towards him. "I'm Terran. Nice to meet you, hon." He smiled again, making her pulse pound in her ears. "My name is Tani. Nice to meet you too." She smiled back. When another gust of wind blew, it took the skirt of Tani's dress, causing it to flare up like a violet flower. When she finally realized he'd called her hon she smiled inwardly and stared at his reflection. A red leaf fell above her own, and made their reflections arch and flatten. She looked at her watch and frowned. "I have to go to school." she said in a gentle breezey voice. Terran grinned and stood up. "If I find my shirt I can walk with you. You do go to Harlotte high, right?" he asked. Tani nodded "Mister truborne. And man is he a boring human." Terran laughed, and she admired the deep, throaty sound."Is that yours?" she asked as she pointed at a tree above them. He grabbed the shirt and slipped it on over his head. "Thanks."he smiled. "No problem," she replied." So your pack...are you all related or is it just friends?" she asked. "Both. James over there," he pointed to the boy with blood red hair." Is the only one not related to any of us. He has a sister named Alicia and two stepsisters named Rain and Jewel." Tani stared at James. "I know. I'm Jewel's best friend." She shifted to face him again. "So who are the others?" she asked. "okay see the guy with the purple-ish hair? Thats Raphael but he insists that we call him Rocky. Apparently only the ladies can call him by his real name."he rolled his eyes. "The little boy over there," he said with a grouchy tone nipping his voice," Is Eric. He's Rocky's little brother." He frowned. "And how do you tie ito all of this?" She asked raising an eyebrow. " Uncle. My sister married their dad three years ago." He said. "I see. And are you looking to make your pack a little bigger?" Tani questioned while standing up. " What are we doing, playing twenty questions or something?" Terran asked, irritated. "I just wanted to know..." Tani replied in a hurt voice. Terran caught a flash of pain in her eyes before she turned and stared at the water again. "Sorry. I kinda got frustrated because I wanted to ask you a few quetions of my own." He said with a hint of regret. " As for the bigger pack, you'd have to ask Rocky. He's the alpha." He added when Tani didn't respond. " Okay."she finally said. Finally, her hair began to gain color again. When her hair was finally a soft brown she turned around to find the whole pack standing behind terran, fully dressed. Rocky, Tani had noticed, now had a redish tint of blonde hair. Tani glanced at her watch, noted the time and turned to dig around in a bush. After watching her poke around in the bushes for a moment, Eric grabbed a glossy red purse off a tree limb and dangled it in front of Tani. "Oh. Thank you." She smiled at him and stood. "I have to be going now. If I don't hurry I'll have to run all the way back to Harlotte." Before she could move more than a step, Rocky had a tight grip on her arm. "I'll drive you there. Wouldn't want you alone one the main road. A pretty thing like you would be snagged up in a heart beat." He said, in a tone that seemed to mock Terran. "Well I guess that'd be okay. Are you sure you could fit me in with you?" She asked, hesitant. "Well sure. You can ride shotgun. I'm sure James wouldn't mind riding in the back."" No problem." James followed up. Terran put his arm around her shoulders and started towards the woods. " Hey wait... I'm not completely sure but isn't there bears in this half of the woods? A-and a mucky marsh?" Tani asked in an anxious voice. "Don't worry. I'll make sure you don't get dirty on the way to the car." He said, slightly amused. "And i'll make sure that nothing hurts you." Rocky added. Sure enough the boys were true to there word. When there really was a danger Rocky took care of it. When they got to the marsh Terran rolled up his pant legs and, scooped Tani up into his arms. The hard curves of his body were pressed dangerously close to the softer of her form. When they made it out of the mucky marsh he set her on the uneven ground and unrolled his pant's legs. "Thank you boys." Tani said, a gleeful light in her eyes. When the car was in sight Tani stared in disbelief. "Thats the car?" She asked, amazed. It was a glossy red Lexus, which was totally out of place, since the woods around it were a dull dark green. James and Eric piled in the back while Rocky slid into the front. Terran opened the passenger door and helped her in. Then, with a gentlemanly bow that made Tani giggle, he hopped in the back next to eric. As they reached the main road Tani worked up the courage to ask her unanswered quetion. " Are you looking to make your pack a little bigger?" she asked. Rocky grinned at the road and shook his head." I thought you'd never ask. It depends on how much a "little" is." he said before Tani could take his shaking his head as a no. "I'd say about...maybe around three girls?" she said. "Are you one of them?" Terran piped up from the back." Yes. I meant me, Jewel and Lily. We've all decided it'd be best if we j--" " Who is this lily girl?" Rocky asked. "My sister. Why do you ask?" "For the simple fact that i didn't know her. Thats all." he said and reached over to pat her leg. Terran in response uttered a low growl which in turn made Rocky stop and return his hand to the wheel. The moment they pulled into a spot at the school Eric and James stumbled out. Tani gathered her purse into her arms as Terran walked up and opened her door. "I'll be waiting for you after school." Rocky said as they made their way to the building. " Mind if i hold your hand?" Terran asked when they stepped up to the doors. "Not at all." Tani said, and walked in the building. He grabbed her hand and they walked to his locker. "So you think Truborne is boring huh? Wait till you get Farson. She is the most annoying old hag i've ever met." He said as he pulled out a binder. He slammed it shut and they walked to her locker hand in hand. "Well Truborne gives out WAY too much homework anyways. Have you ever heard his ranting lecture about how eating healthy ties into global warming? I for one am tired of it and if i hear one more "Vegetables are better than chocolate" or "And if you don't eat healthy you'll want to drive everywhere to avoid excercise" i swear i will tear my hair out." She complained as she got outher own books." I've heard them too don't worry. I'll carry those for you." He said and took her stuff from her. She smiled as they walked routinely to their classes which coincedentally they finally noticed were right next to each other. They went through half the day like that until lunch rolled around. Tani ate something that got her sick so she spent the next class in the infirmary. When her stomach finally stopped flipping she left to go back to her classes. It was seventh period and she had her biology class to go to. When she got there the disgusting coppery smell of blood made her nostrils flare and her stomach clench. She covered her mouth with her hand and examined the crowd for the source of it. She saw her lab partner on the floor with a scalpel stuck in his chest. "What happened?!" She cried out. " Justin was playing around when Jeff slapped him on the arm. He was holding it too close and bam. Just like that he's got the blade lodged in his chest." Her friend Melanie explained. "Oh my god justin!!" She pushed past some of her classmates and dropped next to him. Justin's eyes flickered open and he stared up at Tani." It hurts really bad..." He complained. When she couldn't stand the smell anymore she had to leave. "They must have called an ambulance..." She said to herself as she sank to the floor. " Mom would hurry here if i called." She said aloud and pulled out her purple cell phone. She flipped it open just before she heard the door open on the side of the building. She turned to look and saw an unfarmiliar face, and then her phone went off." Tani here. Whatcha need?" She asked in her normal greeting. It was her dad." Tani honey listen to me. Call your principal and warn him about a stranger with a gun." " Okay. What does he look like?" She asked quickly pulling out a pen and paper. " He's about 6' 5" with spiky black hair, he has red irises, like he's wearing contacts. His complection is a little bit lighter than yours and he's wearing a dark red jacket with some old blue jeans. You got that all down?" Her dad asked. "I sure..do." She replied her voice dripping with fear. "Dad." Her voice cracked." He's here in the building. He's- He's right here in front of me!" She said, her voice hysterical." Oh no. Cheri!! Tani says he's there in the building!! Sweetheart get in a class and lock it up!!""Dad i can't! He's right HERE!"she exclaimed. The stranger stopped and stared down at her. He flashed her a dazzling smile which, in any other situation would have made her swoon." Tani? Tani! TANI!!" Her dad yelled as she hung up and slowly stood. The man grinned and held out his hand to her, as if asking her to go with him. When she cowered back, against the door next to biology, he frowned and pulled out a pistol. "Come with me, sugar. I won't hurt you. I'll take good care of you. I promise." He said, his voice oozing with lies. Just as he grabbed her wrist and pulled her to him, The doors on the hall opened up. Out filed Eric, Terran and James. They all looked very ticked off. They all seemed to be waiting for something, Rocky, perhaps. Sure enough Rocky ran through the door and stood glaring at the man with intense loathing. " Look at least let me call my mom! Justins in there with a scalpel lodged in his chest and he could lose alot more blood." Tani pleaded. The man nodded but didn't let her go. "Mom?mom. Mom listen to me! I need you to come to the school...I know!! Mom justin's got a friggin scalpal in his chest!...No. I didn't. He was here before I knew!" The boys had all formed a tight circle around the man who still had a tight hold on Tani. At that moment he yanked the phone from her and hung up. "Sorry sugar. We don't have enough time for you to have a pleasant conversation with your mommy." Tani tried to jerk free of his grasp but he kept a vice grip on her. Her struggling seemed to make him tighten his grip. "Hey let go!You're hurting me!" She cried. The boys seemed to only step back and watch. "Come on! Let me go!!" She cried again. He began to drag her towards the door until a shadow was suddenly strewn across the exit. Before they knew what was going on the man was flung back, down the hall, taking Tani with him. She landed and skidded across the floor, flying into a wall. Her eyes were squeezed shut so when she was picked up off the floor she freaked out. The moment her eyes opened she was staring up at a junior she'd had a crush on since they were in elementary. " You okay? You hit your head on the wall pretty hard. I'm sure even the boys over there heard it." He said. " I'm fine." She said turning her head because she didn't want him to see her blush." You sure? I can carry you to the nurse if you want." ' I'd be fine if i could have a kiss!' She thought. "I'm fine. Really. No need to worry." She said. "I'll take you anyways." He said, half smiling. When they were far enough away for the others not to hear, Paul set her on her feet but still held his hands on her sides. " I know this sounds weird but i heard what you thought back there. Don't think i'm just trying to ya-" " I know. You aren't joking i kinda figured that when you first walked up. You know what they say. No mind is the same but all wolfs think alike." She said trying to make light of the fact that she had just now figured out that he was also a werewolf. " Well i guess i'd better let you go before those guys tear me up. Tell me something...Are you in a pack or just by yourself?" He asked as the guys caught up. "I'm sorta looking for a bigger pack. Right now it's just me my sister and my best friend. Why?" She asked, in a lighthearted voice. "Well. If it's okay with your watch wolfs i was wondering if you'd go to the movies with me." He implied that he'd wanted to go on a date alone with the watch wolfs comment, as far as Tani was concerned. She turned to look at the guys who were amazingly blank faced. Tani's gaze focused completely on Terrans grey eyes. They told her no but he simply nodded his head with the others. "You know. i don't think any humans would like a pack of wolfs hanging around in a theatre. Do you?" She asked hoping he'd lether go easy." I guess not but they wouldn't mind two i would hope." He said, which caught her completely off guard. " Haven't you heard? The hunters have made the theatre their new hang out. Are you sure you want to go there? I mean the hunters have been known to kill were wolfs by bea--" Paul rolled his eyes and kissed Tani to stop her nervous rambling. "Let's get you checked out." Terran said as he grabbed Tani's arm and led her to the infirmary. "Back again? Oh dear. You're bleeding." The nurse said as if hoping Tani would freak out like normal."Oh. Is that what the smell is, then?" She asked, unaffected. Terran looked at her through the corner of his eye, wondering what had happened to change her so much. After the nurse checked her out and dressed her wound, Terran walked her back towards the class." What was that all about?" He stopped to ask. "What was what about?" Tani asked, her head tilted slightly."That back there. You seemed so...different." He replied. "Oh that...i don't know..." She said softly."I have a headache." She added, gently laying her head on his shoulder and wrapping her arms around him. The boys turned to stare as they arrived at the scene, Where rocky and Eric sat on the mans back. "The only thing we got out of him was his name. Roberto Demirez." When roberto wouldn't stop staring at tani rocky added," And that he's a *****." "I am not." He said from under the boys."I'm only nineteen."He added on for assurance."Sure don't look it. You look thirty at the least." Tani surprised all but terran by replying." Anyways we should really call the cops. He's got a pistol on him somewhere." Terran added. Eric grabbed his cell phone and dialed nine one one. When there was no answer he got suspicious and hung up, turning back and shaking his head. Suddenly a smell met tani's nose that had her whimpering and shaking. "Whats the matter?" Terran asked when tani tried pressing against the wall." Yes whats the matter, honey?" A sneering voice asked from right behind her. She shot froward into another person who grabbed her by the shoulders. "Looks like your girl chose us. I'm sure she's useful someway. She looks like it, at least." "Hunters. Of course. He must be one of them." Rocky practically growled. The hunters smiled, revealing a set of white, sharp teeth. "Look, you leechy cat. Let her go." Terran frowned. "Oh, Now we're leechy cats? Well i thought we were...what was it last time? Oh thats right, we were bloody fluff balls. So now that we have your girl, what will you do to get her back?" The bigger, blonde one asked. Tani struggled and kicked her feet, but the muscular brunette wouldn't let go. "I'm sure you wouldn't mind taking roberto in her place. he's a little more useful to you. Maybe he can fix anything he breaks." A shorter, redhead, said." Let me go!!" She screamed as they dragged her outside.
