Then late Monday night/early Tuesday morning, on of my Mom's mares foaled. The delivery went ok, but the mare didn't pass the afterbirth so we had to take her into the vet early in the morning on Tuesday. She and the little stud colt were home by 1:30 yesterday afternoon, but had to go back by 5:00 because they foal started acting weak. Then at 9:30pm the vet contacts us to recommend that the foal be moved to the Weatherford Equine hospital because his condition was becoming critical. So we picked up the foal and his mom from the vet, and drove them the 1 1/2 hours to Weatherford and he's there now in intensive care. confused It's been a bad year for foals.
Then at about 7:30 last night, my Spotted Saddle mare, Pricilla, (who was due to foal Saturday) started pacing her stall so I sat out with her and waited. Finally, at 11:30 last night she started pushing, and got the head and two forelegs out, but the foal was very large and got an elbow caught on the inside edge of Prisca's pelvis, and wouldn't budge. I pulled and pulled on the leg that was stuck but couldn't get it free, and the foals lips and tongue were starting to turn blue. So I called my Dad and he came out and grabbed the other leg, and both of us pulled, and Prisca pulled the other way till her nose was nearly on the ground. Finally I felt the leg pop as the elbow slipped past the pelvis and Prisca managed the rest on her own. Hence 'Elvis's Patchwork Showgirl' (aka 'Patches') was born! And she's just gorgeous.
Here she is just after we got her dry:
