Red roses weren’t always a vibrant red. They were once a dull grey color and were not liked by many. There was no real use for them, they weren’t elegant or beautiful, they didn’t mean anything, and most people don’t find grey to be…pleasant.

One day a young couple from a village pledged there love for each other. The girl said “I’ll love you for as long as the stars shine.” The boy had said “I’ll love you for as long as the grey roses stay grey.”

Yet then one day the boy fell in love with another and left the girl to wallow in sorrow. He was her one and only, he had made a vow to her and broke it. She went to a high cliff one rainy night, looking down she saw a bushel of grey roses at the base of the cliff. Looking up at the night sky she could faintly make out the northern star through a break in the clouds shining as brightly as it always had. With one final sigh she leaned to the edge and fell onto the rose bush below.

Blood spilled from her body and stained the pedals of the roses bright red. People found her body atop the bush the next day and brought her to the town. The boy saw her body, torn and slashed by the rose thorns. The next day he went to her home and found a small letter on a table that she wrote…

The roses aren’t grey,
The violets all blue,
Your love for me…
It wasn’t true.

The grey rose never changed back to grey, some think that the girls blood stained right into there making and that it couldn’t be changed, others think that she is now the spirit of the red rose and shall remain that way until the stars no longer shine, who knows, but it has been a tradition to give your love a red rose to show your love for them, and if you do not love them fully the rose shall wither and die the day after.
